Schrade made 301 question.

The first version has the grooved boosters, there is a variation of this first version that is exactly the same but does not have the grooved bolsters (and does not have Buck stamped on the reverse of both secondary blades), and then lastly there is the one that you have linked to that has Buck stamped on the reverse of both secondary blades. That's it for the Schrade manufactured 301's, after which Camillus took over about 1971

OK, here is the pro tip, want to know whether a Buck Stockman is a Scharde or Camillus.
JUST glance at the top of the main blade (clip). If it has a swedge or chamfer above the nail nic on the straight portion of the top of the blade , viola its always a Schrade. You don't have to blow on it or even open the knife. Cami swedges NEVER go past the front of the nail nic.

Tin Sue and 300Bucks thanks for the info. The swedge tip really simplifies things alot. Is it safe to assume that the swedge applies to 303's also?

Thanks 300, that is what I suspected, but haven't held enough of the early 301s to make that conclusion. I take it that this applies to the 303s as well.

Nice tip on the swedge cut, 300Bucks! Another way to tell (if you can't see the swedge) is the distinct thinner S-shape handle curve on the Schrade. The Cami's and post 1970 Buck 301's were shaped a bit different, a little thicker, and not quite the S curve.

Looking at poor quality pics, sometimes one can make out that handle shape to help identify a Schrade version, if the stamps and swedges are not visible.

Schrade 301 and 118 personal from the 60's

The frame is the same as a Old Timer 8OT, or any of the Schrade 4" stockman in that pattern family. Additionally, the Schrade 301's always had three pin construction on the handles. Many of the Bucks only had one center pin.

Back in the day, the Schrade blades were hand finished, so the swedge would vary from knife to knife.

This thread inspired me to buy this 301 off fleabay, it's used, and it was cheap.
