Hello,

I recently received one of my father's knives. I figure he bought it in the early 90's. It appears to be an 89OT stockman with a serrated blade instead of the sheepsfoot, but the main blade is stamped MM89 USA instead of 89OT. Some research shows that Schrade made some blades under the Master Mechanic brand and were marked with the MM in front of the traditional pattern number. The Old Timer shield is present in the sawcut delrin handle. Has anyone heard of Schrade stamping the blades incorrectly. Do you think it has any particular value? It has been sharpened a little and has a little pitting.

You got part of the story of the Master Mechanic knives. They were SFO knives made specifically for Cotter Company (True Value Hardware). Your tangstamp is correct. Some will be seen with the OT shield and MM stamp, and some with the MM shield and OT stamp.

As you describe the condition, your MM89 is a good user and, with normal maintenance will give you years of service. A few collectors will give premiums for the MM knives, but usually want them in mint condition for the best prices. Quite a few patterns were made for True Value, and so far, only the MM152 Sharpfinger has been seen as the lone rigid blade from the series.

There were some posts a while back listing the patterns some members had. Try the search feature at the top of the main page.
