I recently was looking at a list of items offered by schrade in 2002 the short line, and I saw a few things I wasnt familiar with, the "schrade old timer classic series." First off I never realized there was a series like this. Second I've Always looked around for bird hook knives and I saw that schrade made a bird hook knife in this series. So here is a couple of more things- did schrade make these in any other line of knives? and Ive serched ebay and I cant find anything in the classic series, are they called something else also or are there just not many of these out there? It looked like there was about 4 of these knives in this inperticular series right or wrong? I saw that they also made one of these in the ducks unlimited series but searching schrade bird hook knives nothing comes up.. I know thats a lot of questions but I thought Id ask. --- Joel

If you wait long enough, abird hook knife will come around. I've seen it a few times in the DU. Those Old Timer Classics are pretty rare on Ebay, but I've seen them every once in a while.

bill, i became enthused with a bird hook knife, a kmart special outdoor knife. it has the sorry looking staglon handles, and the bird hook was crooked as a texas rattler on the highway. i have not seen a schrade bird hook yet, so i am gonna check out your link. if u have some cool bird hooks, share some pics with us. i had never actually seen one until those "outdoor life" knives came out in kmart.

Kris. the outdoor life bird hook knife is actually the only one I own too. I know its cheap and junky but its not a bad knife and it gets the job done that little serrated knife in there will tear some stuff up.

Hey Kris,

Sorry, no bird hooks for me any more. I had a DU once, but traded it off. Here is a picture of one I scrounged up on an internet search...

...so I guess there are some out there, but they do seem hard to come by.

That link above is from the archived old Schrade website.

yeah, that little serrated blade is mean! mine is sharper than the main blade. i was just disappointed by the hook. mine is crooked, and it feels so weak. the main blade reminds me of a muskrats blade. i got pretty ticked, i had to go to every kmart in the state to find one, ended up paying $15 for mine, now there is one at the local flea market for $7. have u guys noticed that they are not restocking them?? all the kmarts here sold out around christmas, and now none of them here have them or the little bone handled folders. did they stop making outdoor life knives or what?

that schrade bird hook seems to be more of a round shape, whereas mt outdoor life one is flat. i betcha that schrade one wont bend as easy as mine either. interesting. i bought the outdoor life one in a clampack, so i couldnt really see the hook to well. i suppose i was under he impression it was round to. i agree with u gradall, it is a ok user. i keep my outdoor life on the coffee table to open up mail and my dip cans. i guess i bought mine mainly for nostalgic purposes, i used to gt a subscription to outdoor life when i was a kid. i used to love the cover artwork, and i would sit and stare at the deer on the front thinking of the upcoming hunting season. aaahhh....to be 10 yrs old again!!

Yep its perfect for opening skoal cans and it has actually been a pretty good conversation piece a few times. I just think bird hook knives are neat... There just isint one around every corner so when I see one im kind of intrigued. Any way its like they say you get what you pay for and for 10 bucks it suites me just fine. I just wish uncle henry would of made one of these or maybe they did but I can only imagine it.... It would of been beautiful or ever old timer besides that classic series.

oh yea...a UH would have been awesome!! like u, i thought it was awesome to see, so i had to have one. i have a few magazine knives, a field & stream, with wood handles and cool shield with a deer on it, got it off ebay for $10, the outdoor life knife, and a sorry sorry sports afield knife i got at wal-mart. it was in a clampack, and i couldnt see the back of it. so when i got it home, i found out that it had 2 missing pins on the back, the blade wobbled like a drunk on sat. night, and the "staglon" handles actually melted in the sun! i use it now to scrape dead bugs off my bumper, it aint no good for nothing else.

if u find a UH or OT, i guarantee it will be awesome. wonder if muskratman(kaleb) could make one?? maybe turn a regular 885UH into one with a bird hook?? the guy is talented enough. that would be one hell of a custom huh?

Those Old Timer Classic knives do show up on eBay sometimes, although I haven't seen one of the birdhook models recently.

Here's the flyer displayed at the Collectors of Schrades R Us website:

Here's a recent eBay auction for a knife that I think is an Old Timer Classic:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...MEWN:IT&viewitem=&item=200089743145&rd=1&rd=1
There was only one bidder, but notice the auction category and notice it isn't advertised as an OTC. It didn't include the tin or factory paperwork, so perhaps the high-dollar bidders weren't interested.

The puzzling thing about it, and why I qualify that I only think it's an OTC, it doesn't have the Everlasting Sharp blade etch. Everthing else is correct - the fancy shield, pattern, handles, and tang stamp.

I would be more than willing to give muskrat a muskrat nib and have him put a bird hook in one end that would be awesome. wonder what that would cost. or even a 285uh with a bird hook... that sounds good too. ---Joel

Joel,
Schrade also did one as part of the Federal Duck Stamp series. I've collected a few from the series and lo and behold, here's the one they did. If you do a search for federal duck stamps on Ebay, that's how I found this one.

....nice knife Marc. Question: What does the hook do? I've cleaned and eaten a lot of Quail in my time but I have never had to resort to a hook? Dont tell me its to pull out the entrails like a surgeon... thats what we've got hands for! Dont tell me its to slip around their little leg to stop them running away either! I'm nearly 6' and 16 stone and can take my chances with a Quail anyday! I played Rugby League for 5 years ..our brand of football.. and didnt wear a helmet or padding either and they're all the same size as me.That ought to get a fight going on me on this forum!!! I asked Joel the same thing about a birdhook.

When I've cleaned any fowl, if you take a clip blade (a muskrat works well) and slice under each shoulder/wing blade (parallel to back of bird, towards the neck, and stop when you hit the joint), then when you hold the breast and pull back on the neck, all of the guts will pull out together and the breast cavity will be clean.

The entrails will be somewhat attached to the hindquarters, and easy to remove all at once. A couple of old hunting pals of my dad showed me this 40 some years ago at the end of a quail hunt, and it can save a lot of time if you have to clean a bunch of birds.

We sometimes had 6 - 8 hunters and 50 - 60 birds. I liked to be the slicer/separater on the assembly line, which was desirable to being the guy that had to skin and defeather. You didn't want to do both or you kept getting feathers all over the cleaned quail. The last guys had to wash off the cleaned birds in a cold creek and your hands would freeze.

I've showed it to many hunters on ducks, pheasant, grouse, and even geese and it works every time.

Guys, I have to admit that I've never used the hook before either. I'm sure at one time, it had it's uses but I use my hands as well. It is an unusual item and that's why I like it.

Larry, I'm 6' as well but only have 2 stones. How do you find pants that fit 16? :)

I'm 6' and 17 stone, finding regular pants that fit is becoming harder.

What the hell is a stone, Im a little young I guess or something I'm 6'1 and a bunch of rocks but I dont know about stones. Help a youngster out here fellas. Joel

Stones is an English commonwealth weight measurement, 14 Lbs = 1 stone
So if Larry is 16 stone, he weighs 224 Lbs, I way 238 Lbs generally just trying to say that, at this size pants are getting hard to find in regular shops 42 waist or there abouts. I thought when Larry posted his weight the Stones it may raise a few eyebrows .
