I have an unmolested, never read use, Schrader old timer Walden 165. Nowhere on this knife does it have a serial number or where it was made. Can anyone tell me more about this.

I don't know off hand, but I bet some of the experts in the Schrade Collectors area know all about it. I did a search for "165" in that sub-forum:

By the way, Welcome to Bladeforums!
Bagdad is just about my favorite place in all of Arizona, about the only place left in the state that still feels like 'authentic' Arizona.
The rest of state feels over-run by tourists, urban sprawl, retiree trailer parks, and cowboy kitsch. :(

If it doesn't have a USA stamped on it in front of the handle then it is almost for sure a Chinese made knife with the Schrade name. The Schrade name was sold after their bankruptcy about 10 years or so ago and all of the new models made since then are Chinese clones. If you post a picture of the tang stamp it will be pretty easy to confirm this.

I believe my dad bought this knife back in the early 80's. I cannot see a tang stamp at all.

First, if it's a "Schrade-Walden" it's from well before the Chinese buyout.

Your posts confuse me...no tang stamp? Are you sure it's a Schrade-Walden then? If so....

It wouldn't necessarily have a serial number. It should have the S/W stamp on it though, that's troubling. In researching the Old Timers (I have a 15 OT Deerslayer that I cherish), S/W could be hit and miss at times when it came to serial numbering and tang stamps---especially during periods where they would produce a knife...file for patent...wait for patent...get patent and require new tang info....etc. So lack of stamp isn't totally conclusive.

If it's real it's going to be a rare OT it looks like. It reminds me of the Sharpfinger but more pronounced.

I would go to the Schrade section of this forum and post for info. Someone will show up and tell you more than you need to know for sure. :)

You need to post pics. We'd be able to help you better if we could see what you are talking about.

I've never had NY success posting pics on this forum before. I could send some pics of the knife if someone could post for me. It appears to be a bone handle but I could be wrong. The right side of the handle is morked "OLD TIMER" and the right side of blade is stamped SHRADE WALDEN 165. I can find no other markings on the knife. It could also be from the 70's. My dad has been gone for almost 25 years now, do I know its at least that old along with about a half dozen lives I have of his.

So it DOES have a tang stamp? It's probably a legitimate knife.

The handle is likely saw cut Delrin that can look a lot like stag.

Someone will show up soon with the story.....hang onto it until then. It's a nice knife. Main thing is it will be good 1095 steel and not part of the Chinese-era of Schrade.

Really it's not so rare that, knowing the model number, you should be able to find all the info about it via Google and perusing the various sites where they are currently being sold...and on the Schrade section of this forum.

Schrade closed down in 2004 when the trademark was sold along with all of their inventory. Back then, there were huge numbers of Schrade USA knives at shows for sale. The number has come down, but still pretty common and you can often find exactly the model you are looking for at a reasonable price. The current Chinese Schrades are.... well okay, but not like the originals. The new stuff frequently does not say "China" on the ones I have looked at, but it probably has it on the packaging.

Schrade Waldens date back to the 1940's as I recall.

I just noticed that Schrade and Buck started making knives at about the same time. Interesting.

It does "NOT" have a tang stamp but I'm sure its from the 70's to earl 80's known when my dad did his dealings with knives.

No pictures no answers... you can click on my name and send them to me. Or mail the knife to me. :D

Schrade Walden USA 165OT knives were made from 1967 to 1973, and the 165OT was made until 1991 as Schrade USA. Schrade did stamp their blades and I see now you must have found them.

Which is it? It does or doesn't have a tang stamp? If as in the upper post, it is stamped blade right "SCHRADE WALDEN 165" and has no serial, then it was made between circa 1970-1972. (we still call the stamp out on the blade a tangstamp) They quit serializing the pattern circa 1969-70 shortly after the stamp was moved from blade left to blade right. The handle material would not be bone unless someone replaced the production Delrin covers. They were molded and dyed to simulate sawcut bone.

As to the time he bought the knife, that would not strictly indicate when it was made, just that it was not made later than that. For instance just last year I bought a Schrade Walden 165OT with serial number 00009, the 9th one made in 1966. It was still new in it's original box with sheath, papers, stone etc. just as it left the factory many years ago. It is possible that your Dad did buy his knife new circa 1980's but it is almost definitely made as I said, circa 1970-72.
