I am thinking about buying a little skinner sheath knife made by schrade from smoky mtn knife works. I know there made overseas know but can anyone tell me about schrade oldtimer knives. Are they any good. Do they have good metal. Thanks for any help.

If you watch closely, you should be able to find an older USA made Schrade skinner. I like that knife, but haven't seen one new in many years (made in US, I mean). I believe the steel used was 440C, but don;t hold me to that. The ones today are made in China and I refuse to buy one. A couple of months ago, I was at a knife and gun show and had a chance to get a used one...I'm kicking myself now for not paying the seller's price.

The new ones aren't very good at all. I have a Buzz saw Trapper that won't hold an edge for even an hour of work.

If you're sold on the Schrade skinner, that's ok. But if not, there are several makers out there that make similar upswept skinners. Kizlyar makes a couple of nice damascus blades (expensive, but nice) and Muela makes a beautiful little skinner. I think Buck even makes a similar profiled skinner. There are others too, but here is a link for the aforementioned:

Hmmm, i didnt know Buck made that type of knife. Thanks for the info guys. I dont want one if its made in China. I was hoping that it was still made to same specs as the old ones were. If there not then i wont buy it. I will check out the Buck website though. I dont know why i want one, its not like I dont have enough knives. I have almost 100. Im waiting on a Rat3 and a Tak to come in within the next month or so. Im just knife crazy i guess.

I said "I think" Buck makes a similar upswept skinner - perhaps they don;t. Check out worldknives.com

Afew weeks back, a local hardware was closing out the knives in stock.
I scored on several case knives and when the clerk opened the display case, lo and behold were two Schrade 158OT guthook skinners in boxes with paperwork which I got for $15.00 each.
These particular knives are Carbon steel by the way.

Yup, the skinners were carbon steel. Unfortunately mine was stolen from my truck :( If you can find an old one, it's a great knife.

The Imperial-Schrade Corporation went bancrupt and was legally dissolved in 2004. Taylor Brands now owns the Schrade name and has Schrade knives contract-made both overseas and by USA knifemakers. AFAIK all of the current Old Timers are made in China.

You should have no trouble finding a pre-2004 Old Timer on eBay though. That was a very common model and was made over a long period of time. Look for the "USA" tang stamp and older box styles.

I don't know if Buck makes something exactly like the Old Timer or not but if you browse the Buck website you can see all of their models, and all of the Buck knives that are made in the USA are clearly marked.

Happy hunting!

Buck Kalinga Pro. It's a little bigger than the Schrade, but it's a pretty nice looking upswept skinner. Made in USA i believe
