I have two of the 899 patterns. One is a Schrade USA 899, the other is a Schrade NY USA with 899 on the back.

Notice in the pictures, the second blade on the newer one is a sheepsfoot, and the older one has a spey. The newer one has a longer punch blade.
Anyone else have some 899 stock knives, for a comparison?

Looking at some old catalogs I see the 899 shown with a Sheepfoot blade in 1974 & a spey blade in 1973. If you can believe the Schrade catalogs, (not always a safe bet) ;) that should be about the time of the change.

Here is my 889

Since the Schrade Walden name was stopped (for the most part) in 1973, my guess is that your knife with the spey blade was made about the time of the change. Is the spey blade the one with the number on the back? Schrade Walden put their numbers on the back of the master blade & when they changed over to Schrade the moved them around to the front, if memory serves me correctly. If that is the case, I would say that is more evidence that it was made around the time of that transition.

Not often you can date a Schrade that closely (if indeed I am right). :D

Thanks Dale. I'm in agreement with you on the dating. In my collection there are a number of Schrade NY knives with the pattern number on the back, and more with NY stamp and the pattern number on the front. Pretty sure a rear blade (is that the ricasso) pattern stamp is older that one on the front, at least within the same pattern. A digging through Larry's site found two more 899's with the Schrade USA stamp, both with the sheepsfoot.

Anyone know how long the NY was included in the stamp after 1973?

Not too long. The NY was deleted when the original tang stamps wore out would be my guess. Most of the period illustrations omitted tang stamp details, but if you look hard, you might find a few that didn't. Possibly in the flyers or magazine ads.
