Clampack or box, once you've whipped it out, it is no longer a virgin. A clampack, love 'em or hate 'em, is a chastity belt. Right knife, right papers, right copyrights and trademarks are in there. No one has assembled a set from a hodgepodge. But boxed examples seem to bring more on the collector's market now. Not all patterns, or all variants of all patterns came in clampacks either. And some of the most collectable knives came in wood or other presentation boxes with fitted trays, or in tins.
IMHO, buy and collect what you like. Toss the boxes and papers and clampacks, or carefully preserve it all as you like. Heck, even use them. Most of us do.
