I found one of these knives new in the box at the local flea market today. It has natural stag handles with brown leather sheath, has all papers and the leather lanyard thong for the knife. Box is unusual, I have not seen one like it before, it is black, with a blue stripe down one side and the Schrade Cutlery logo info in gold. The printed box also has a plain white cardboard outer sleeve. This is one of the nicest Schrades I have seen to date. The box is dated copyright 1991, so I figure it is from 1991/1992 time frame. The stag handles look nice, it really looks almost like a custom made knife, but it is factory, as the box print mentions the stag handles. I gave $40 for it. Anybody have any more info on this one?

I have one exactly like that, box and all. You got it for an excellent price. I display mine with my Buck elk handled dagger, they compliment one another, I think.

As you may know from visiting our forum, the Pro Hunters were descendents of the Loveless/Schrade collaboration. I believe Schrade was the first production knife company to engage in that kinda deal. The main difference is that Bob Loveless had Schrade use his type of handle rivets on the original version.

The PH2 had a short run, 1991-1995. Majority of them were black, smooth delrin handles. There are some other versions mentioned in Robert Clemente's book, including the Ducks Unlimited issue. I made a recent post about these pro hunters (see my post below: "LovelessDesigned Professional hunters") showing a few of the oddballs that have come to the surface since Schrade ended production. Whatever, we both have exceedingly beautiful, relatively rare knives. Congrats on your find!

Can any of you other guys add anything??? I wonder what exactly the ES suffix stands for. Oh, and I was under the impression this was bone carved to look like stag. Still an honorably natural and beautiful handle.

Hi Phil,

Thanks for the additional info. As far as the handles being bone carved to resemble stag, I was only going by the box which uses the words "natural stag". I agree with you, even if they are really carved bone, it is still a beautiful knife. Your picture is just like my knife. I was also wondering what the ES designated. Thanks again, this is a great forum!

Well, now that you mention it, the box does state that. And Sambar was not embargoed back in 1991 or so. Could be European stag as well. I think I was wrong on that bone business.

This is a great forum, but only because we have such interesting things brought to our attention to discuss by those who visit here. Thank you.

Phil

I think you are on the right track on the "ES" designation. From what I have seen of Schrade's designations, "L" definately stands for leather, and they usually use similar letters to denote other specific materials. Unlike car companies who use "ZXR" and such because it sounds hot. European Stag would be my guess.
