I found these knives for a $1.00 and they are about the cheapest looking handled knife Ive ever seen. Its still a pretty cool schrade so I thought I'd try to rehandle it. Its no rehandle job like some of the guys around here do but I liked it and its my first one. I just did it with stuff I had laying around my garage. aluminum bolsters and oak handle. Anyway I kind of liked doing it so I thought Id show it here for some constructive criticism. any thoughts. here is the before and after pictures. thanks - Joel

That's very neat, Joel! How did you do the "beading"?

Its like the type of beads used for dog tags like a stainless necklace material, but much smaller I found them at a hobby shop. I attached the aluminum and then the wood and I filed out a small groove and cut the length of beads to fit and very carefully epoxyed them in. I just thought it would be a little different. I thought of trying to make some kind of a shield for it too. Im still working on that.

Well, you asked for constructive criticism, so here goes:rolleyes: !
I have strong opinions about Barlows! Mostly, I don't think they should have shields. At least the regular sized ones!
The decoration belongs on the bolster, IMO! Otherwise, if you put something on the handles it looks too "disjointed", i.e; two things happening unharmoniously. Schrade put a diagonal banner across some GDOT's, and that doesn't look too bad, but the new Case Barlows with shields look awkward and ungainly. Carve an initial in the bolster, or file it, or something, but a shield on the handle, with that big flat bolster next to it ruins the look!
Next time, I'll tell you how I REALLY feel:eek: !!:D :D

NICE!!! looks like a jam-up job to me. the beads are a cool addition. the knife brings to mind a smooth cigar and cappucino in the evning. dont ask, i hangout in a cigar shop full of guys 3 times my age!!! anyway, great job joel, i think u did just fine.

Looks killer joel, a rebolster isn't the easiest thing to do, you might try beveling the edges more next time. But you did a wonderful job, especially for a first try, I like the texture between the bolster and handle, very creative.

1- I agree with Charlie.........a shield on a Barlow is not good. It becomes overwhelming.
2- Rounding the bolsters can give the knife a more traditional look.
3- I am curious, did you use the existing liners from the shell construction or did you make new ones? Also how did you attach the bolsters? (I don't see a pivot pin).

All in all I think it looks great! The beads give it a nice look, and I imagine were easier than trying to haft the handle to the bolsters (a chore that I still spend a lot of time on and am usually less than perfect at).

An outstanding first attempt. Oak is a good choice for a handle. If you can find some quarter sawn oak it usually has a bit more character. Great job! :D

Keep up the good work,
Dale

Nice work, Joel...

Next time, go for something a little more exotic. When I "pimp" a knife (when I can find the time), I will find materials that are handy, like you did. But I also try to use something that will give the piece a whole new look. The beads are a neat touch.

Keep up the good work, and show us the pics...

I just epoxyed the bolosters and handles on I didint know how to make new liners or start messing with pins and stuff. Liquid nails makes a 2 part expoxy that they say is perfect for attaching wood to metal and metal to metal. on the first one I tried I had to take the wood back off and It totally destrtroyed the knife and the wood so I think the stuff works. anybody got any info or where to find some info on redoing the liners and how to put pins in and stuff like that? If schrade would of put a little more work into the handles of these knives they may of been a little more appealing.

Thanks guys I appreciate it. and the shield is definatly out! I may do a little file work on the bolsters though. thanks again for looking....
