Schrade "Saran"? Is this knife a Schrade or a scam?

I've never seen this knife before. It seems a poor design with the sharpened edge exposed when closed, does NOT say "Schrade" anywhere on knife or packaging and doesn't look at all Schrade-like to me but the seller included a COA saying it's from the "Schrade Factory Collection". It even says it's manufactured by Saran Industries Inc and last I checked that's not Imperial Schrade Corp.

What's the verdict? Scam? Schrade?

Dave - Sure is an odd one
A quick Google brought this up

Came from Factory Auction via Smoky Mtn

A quote from the page above:

"This knife has got us a little puzzled. It was found at the factory in Ellenville,NY. The plastic box calls it a "Saran Knife",manufactured by Saran Industries of Indianapolis, IN. I actually spoke to the gentleman who invented the knife. He told me they were made to cut overgrowth that grew on the chain link fences in the business he was formerly involved with. He patented the design in the early 80's and started producing the knives. The company hired to produce the knives, Mr.Saran said, was from Syracuse,NY. We are not sure as to why this knife would have been in the Schrade Factory. It possibly was farmed out to Schrade or was being considered by Schrade to go into production. The knife has lightweight black plastic handles, and an unusual pruning shaped stainless steel blade. It measures 5 1/4" closed and is in mint condition in the original black plastic Saran Industries case."

I have 7 of those identical Certificates for knives that have been identified as coming from the 'Wall' collection...all are dated the same purchased on 30th May 2006....I note that Certificate is dated March 2007..dont know if that holds any significance.....I believe there was discussion previously on this or another forum about knives found/sold at the Factory clearance that were possibly being considered by Schrade for their design aspects, and were not actually made by Schrade...
I have a Carbolux Heavy Duty Linesmans knife in its original Clampac made I believe by Imperial Schrade for Holub Industries INc of Sycamore Illinois. Schrade as manufacturer does not appear on the packaging or the knife..so as has been stated numerous times..with Imperial Schrade anything could happen............Hoo Roo.

It may have been a personal knife laying in someone's desk for all anyone knows. EVERYTHING was auctioned at the factory, most likely you'll one day see a roll of toilet paper with a certificate, straight from the factory auction.

...but...but.....Eric you would be more browned off mate without the toilet paper or a certificate.......LOL.......

LOL, yep, they're interchangeable.

Speaking of copying knives though, the LB7 was initially going to be an exact copy of the Buck 110. Dave Swinden told a story about how, before tooling started, Albert Baer called him into his office and asked why there were changes made to the design of the knife. Dave replied that they thought they could make a few changes/improvements, to which AB shouted something to the effect that "Buck's been using the same design for twenty years without seeing a need for changes, and now you're smarter than they are?". Dave just nodded, he didn't dare tell him that it was brother Henry who made the changes. :D:D

Eric - And we all know how that turned out (quality-of-product-wise)

I just gave my brothers 4-pin LB7's - they had been Buck 110 owners for years and were indeed impressed.

Thanks for the info guys! You really came through with the Worthpoint listing Howie; I couldn't have asked for more.

I was thinking along the lines of what Eric said too that if it was in somebodies drawer at Schrade then it was part of "The Factory Collection" at auction time. I want an official Schrade Factory Collection toilet seat to go with the paper. Anybody have one? ;)

Thanks for the LB-7 tidbit Eric. Please keep sharing stuff like that. Your working with Dave Swinden is a great resource for Schrade insider info. Please thank him for me (and all Schrade-o-holics) for sharing.

No problem at all Dave, and I'll definitely thank him. Now about that toilet seat, if you really want it I can get one, although after seven years there's no telling what's growing on 'em. :-)

Eric, I would really love to see a floor plan for the Schrade factory. I have seen the building from the outside just couldn't get in the door.

Larry, I may be able to find something, I know there are printouts on the walls with evacuation routes, but I'm not sure if they cover the whole place. I'll see if Wally or Dave have anything that I can copy. I doubt there's anything left at the factory that isn't completely saturated by now, the roof leaks like it's raining 24/7. Really a shame, although it's pretty much gutted at this point anyway. If you're down this way again let me know ;)
