The Schrade Scrimshaw knives, sometimes called “fakeshaw”, are an expansive and interesting series to me. Some pieces have beautiful and inspired artwork and some are so-so. For those interested, it can be fun to chase them. But to assemble a complete collection of them, year after year, would be tedious, time consuming and rather expensive. I dabble with them occasionally and have a general idea to acquire one representative example of each pattern, regardless of year of issue. Full sets are selling for more than I care to spend, and almost certainly more than they would return as an investment even if kept for more than a few years given the depreciation of the dollar.
The example I have chosen for this writing is the 518SC pattern based upon the 158OT Guthook Skinner. The base 158OT made it’s catalog debut in the 1988 catalog. Oddly, it made it’s Scrimshaw debut the same year as the American Pride 518SC Scrimshaw, a bonus knife given to dealers with the purchase of an HK88 hunting knife display.

Sporting an “eagle” design, it is patriotic and lives up to it’s name in that respect. There were only 6,000 of them made, so besides being unique in being a first-year-of-pattern issue, they are a bit hard to come by.
The first year in which the new 518SC was used in the Scrimshaw Of The Great American Outdoors series was in 1989. That year’s set was comprised of seven knives, the 518SC being the second fixed blade in that year’s set. MSRP was $32.95.

While the base 158OT pattern had a production run of 1989-2002, the 518SC Scrimshaw version was only in production from 1988 through 1991 that I am aware of at this time. The five issues I know of are:
1988 - 518SC - Bald Eagle - American Pride LE etch - Bonus for HK88 - 6,000 pcs.
1989 - 518SC - Bighorn Sheep Facing Right
1990 - 518SC - Buck Deer Rubbing Antlers
1991 - 518SC - Bear Walking Left
1991 - 518SC - Chamois Scene - 518SCE SCRIMSHAW EUROPE SCE91LTD set - 250 Pcs
Here is a picture of the 1989 issue:
If I used my inflation calculator on the original 1989 MSRP of $32.95, today’s suggested retail would be $54.44. I obtained this example for $19.99, $12.10 in 1989 dollars. However, the blade has some tarnishing and there is no box or papers. And it appears that it is one of the less popular Scrimshaw patterns, most collectors chasing the various issues of the 502SC Sharpfinger pattern and the 507SC / LB-7 lock back patterns. Still, with both of these mentioned examples in my collection, I can move on to some of the other patterns.
