Does anyone know the history / rarity of the Schrade Scrimshaw SC-507 with grizzly bears on one handle and a space for personalizing on the other?

Are they unusual? When were they made?

The handles aren't real bone, are they?

Thank you.

The Schrade scrimshaws were, with a few notable exceptions, ivory colored Delrin, hotstamped with the color added by an inking tape. The earliest SC507 I have listed is in 1981. It was a bear art pattern, but so was an issue in 1985, 1989, and 1992. Most were limited to 1,500 in serialized sets and 1,500 individual pieces. Real hard to say which yours is without seeing it. There were also scrims issued as part of the commemoratives program, for the AL program (advertising pieces for companies). Let's see what you have?

1985 from the Schrade Scrimshaw of the Great American Outdoors Series (seven knives). Retail on your knife was $26.95 then.

I can't give you current value of it or the set. Nice knife though.

Thank you for clearing up some questions I've been meaning to ask. I picked up an SC507 with the Ivory colored Delrin with an Alligator on one side, a framed area for inscription (?) on the other side and "GATORS" etched on the blade. As I found this in a Pawn Shop in Starke, Fl, outside of Gainesville, Fl, and I had assumed that it was a commemorative for the UF Gators. It's in real good shape, never been sharpened, but with no sheath. Cost me $20.00. I figured it was a pretty good deal, as the LB7's that this is the same style as, I used to buy for "using" knives were in the $30-40 range, back when Schrade was healthy. ACE hardware was a real good source for finding Schrades up till last year, at least around my part of Florida, after I found out about Schrade closing and I started collecting whatever new knives I could fiind (original Schrade, not Taylor chinese crap). I still stop in ACE whenever I see one in the little North Fla towns and sometimes luckout.

It may well have been. Schrade did several college knives over the years, including the 503SG with the gator on it, but in orange Delrin. Anytime they had art, and a demand..... an Alumni or booster group may have comissioned them. Even small town police departments had scrims made.
