i have recently received this knife, a 5" LB, with partially serrated clip blade and "rubber"? handles with a Sturm Ruger shield. it's a big handle and v. solid knife, and only $12 in this case. they are regulars on ebay right now.
i cannot find it in sticky or searching "Sturm".
were these a new line being made just at closing and not released ? and then Ruger went to Case ?
anybody else got one or know it's history ? nothing on it to denote Taylor.
thanks, roland (Schrade knife guy of the Kootenays)

From what I can tell, they were a batch of knives shielded for Ruger by Schrade near the end. From the quantity seen since the auction in 2004, it seems the whole batch, though ready for shipping, was sold in the auction. They have been as available, if not more so than the base SG-7 knives. I have the NWTF and RMEF badged versions. And um....SG-7S (serrated). I need the SG-7W which had a wood veneer insert. Oh, and I think I have a racing theme one. Ingersol-Rand team. And the SG-8 which was a drop point. TPR thermoplastic rubber is how the handles were called, IIRC. I don't always though. Oh... and they were the Outback Series.

Larry knows!
The SG7's were 1st published in 1993 and featured on the 1994 cover of the shortline catalog.
There are 3 models. SG7,SG7S and SG7W
The SG7S is serrated and the SG7W has a wooden inlay in the handle.

Personal opinion the handle is uncomfortable and a bit large.

thanks yet again Codger. these SG knives are new to me. although mine is serrated it is stamped SG7, not SG7S. was the SG7S tang D/C'd in favour of just SG7, whether serrated or not ?

Right. A lot of later patterns were done that way. Usually the alpha extension for the variant was only in the catalogs and flyers, maybe on the boxes, but not on the stamps. IIRC, eventually the fine edge was discontinued and the combo edge became the norm.

Strum Ruger ordered 500 SG7S for delivery 1/01
Came with the standard nylon sheath.
At the same time they also ordered 500 PH1 and 500 PH2's with stag handles and another 500 PH1's with black Micarta handles.

Given the sheer number of these seen on eBay since '04, I am wondering if they were not shielded during the last days to finish up stock for the auction. It seems that the hundreds of Ruger Outbacks exceeds the overrun/replacement stock quantities that would have been kept on hand for the 500 knives ordered. But maybe not the number of special shields produced. The same knife mould was used for several of the other sfo's mentioned, so unshielded finished knives may have been held as "universal" replacements. Just a guess.

Codger, i think so too, that my SG7 is a late production. many of these have recently come up for sale. interesting to me how often this is happening with many knives of varying makers, that someone buys a batch of "factory" knives and somehow holds on to them for years and then suddenly releases them. i doubt i would have that much patience.
but, it's still a "real " Schrade, so i am happy. roland
