about a week ago i bought a schrade tactical pen (second gen), good pen, but the part you grip was just too fat (it felt like i was holding a marker). on my lunch break the other night i went to the machine shop (in my job) and asked for a favor. i wanted to mill the barrel to a better thickness and make the striking end less pronounced.

before the work:

on the lathe:

after milling i gave it a brushed finish by hand, using a scotch brite pad. the striking end was done by me, by hand on a belt sander:

Nicely done! I am a huge fan of modifying knives and anything in your edc kit. Now you will never find another one like it!

How do you like it BTW? I need a new pen, and have seen this one.

Nice work! I just wish those pens didn't have the ugly flat spot on them. It kind of ruins the otherwise sleek lines.

In terms of quality they're a great tactical pen for the money. Have had both the 1st gen schrade and the blue super-spiky S&W one and unfortunately lost both, but at the low asking price I haven't sweated it too much...but now I feel lost without it! I used the blue pointed one as a marlin spike for undoing knots a lot. :p The size of the cartridge they use is identical to the space pen refill found at Staples. ;)

thanks guys. it's a nice pen for the money but it seems like they designed it backwards. IMO, it's like they designed a tactical spike and made it into a pen, they should designed a good pen and overbuilt it to be "tactical". im the type of guy that if i don't like something i either return it or correct it, i have no problem modding my tools to work better (for me). now the pen is just as strong as before but it functions better as a pen IMO.

i like the brushed finish, but i'll probably polish the pen tonight to see how i like it.

p.s. thanks for the tip fourtytwo, i'll have to give the fisher refill a try (when i run out of ink).

i was noticing minute scuffs on the aluminum with the brushed finish so i use some mothers mag&aluminum polish to polish the pen. i also sanded the pocket clip with 400 grit sandpaper and used the metal polish on it.

p.s. im thinking about painting the clip, maybe a medium or dark metallic blue.

wouldn't u want a spikey end for sd???

then again I could hardly think of a time I'd use a tatical pen over a knife or a gun but thats just me.

i bought a tactical pen because they are strongly built pens and i wanted a pen i won't break. im not too worried about the "tactical" aspect of the pen.

This is the one I had until recently. :o The pointy end really came in handy for undoing knots.
