Is there a way to date an Old Timer by the tang stamp? I found a 1940T in a box today and I notice it is stamped a bit differently from some I have seen,

1940T1.jpg

others I have seen have a three line tang stamp

Schrade
USA
1940T

A Three Line Stamp is older than a Two Line Stamp in the same pattern, and a:

SCHRADE
N.Y. U.S.A
8OT

with N.Y. on the second line with USA is older as well. And the pattern number could be stamped on the pile side (possibly older) like a Schrade Walden stamp. Stamp progressions varied from pattern to pattern, and is fairly impossible to date by year, but possible to date to a range of years. Hope this helps a little.

Clemente's notes: 1976-1998
C. Catalog History Notes:
1 First introduced in 1976 catalog
2 In 1976 the 194OT was called Lock Blade
3 In 1978 the 194OT was named Pocket Lockblade
4 In 1987 it was first named Gunstock Trapper Lockblade
5 Then in 1993, the term “lockblade” was dropped from being part of the name, but continued as a descriptive word after the name
6 In 1996 the 94OT, two blade pattern of the 194OT, name was changed to Trapper, Gunstock Trapper continued as the name of the one blade liner lock
7 The 194OT was dropped in 1998, last remaining liner lock system lockblade in a classic trapper style in the industry

Nice info Larry, regarding the box types and name changes. The 194OT did have a 3-Line Stamp in it's initial issue. This is one with the LOCK BLADE name sticker, in the larger wood grain box with a felt covered cardboard liner. I do not believe the 194OT pattern had a stamp version with N.Y. included in the stamp. To the point of my earlier post, I have a 77OT in an identical box, with a 2-line stamp. So far on this forum, no one has an example of a 77OT with a 3-line stamp, yet. Really no way of knowing if the knife was original to be box. The 77OT came out the same year as the 194OT, 1976. If the 77OT knife is original to the box, it shows the problems of trying to date a Schrade with a stamp (or even the original packaging).

1976 was a major release year for a bunch of OT's, Scrims
I was looking at the annual sales meeting last night. Found this.
