Last night as I was walking through one of the most fun stores in America(Home Depot :D) and picking up some nice DeWalt stuff I notices something shiney and small hanging behind the cutie at the register. So seeing how this gave me a chance to flirt and play with a toy I asked to see one of them. Low and behold it was a Schrade Tough Chip. There is almost always a multitool with me, so many of the components come in hand throughout the day, but I've never looked at anything this small.

First the price was only $19.99, which of course struck that male instinct of "Its shiney, cheap, and has moving part so I must buy it", beaing a weak man I gave into the primitive forces. Not a bad little tool. Once at home I did a search on all of Bladeforums and only found four threads with it mentioned, only three were discussion based. In those threads people compared it to the Leatherman Micra, but I haven't seen one of those first hand either.

To me the Tough Chip makes itself very compact. One feature that stands out is the ability to access its tools whether its open or closed because they are exposed on the flats rather than the sides. All the steel is brushed and has a slight texture to it adding to the grip. The scissors are razor sharp and out of the package will rival any knife blade. Now whether they will remain sharp will only be see over time. It packs a small but very well thoughout tool comprising of:

Scissors (Main Utility)
Pick
Tweezers
Nail File
Medium Flathead Screwdriver
Phillips Screwdriver
Bottle Opener
Knife Blade

All the tool blades have their own individual fingernail catch for easy opening. It came with a compact nylon belth sheath, however it has a built in lanyard hole if you wanted to carry it that way. The only improvement I would make would be to remove all the rivot joints and replace them with something that could be tightened by the owner down the road should anything start to loosen up. All in all I'm very pleased with the Schrade Tough Chip for an added daily carry item.

I have a Tough Chip, but the one I bought did not come with the sheath. The shears cut paper very well but have a "tough" time cutting through fabric. Also, the small clip point blade was not that sharp out of the box, but is very easy to sharpen.

I had the "Tough Tool" and it had the same advantage over Leatherman multitools. However I found the steel quality to be off. The blade edge got damaged easily as well there were problems with corrosion. I loaned it to a friend of mine and when I checked on it about a year later it was in sad shape.

Bought one at Home Depotthe same way. Love that place,
and they love my money to. I agree with El Cid, the shears
leave a lot to be desired. But I do like the size. when you
put it on your belt it is hard to tell its there.

I'm curious to see how it performs over time. I used it for all my packaging needs today just to see how it would handle the chore. Snipped right through Ductape about ten times, and that stuff is pretty thick. Never snagged or got stuck between the shears, but it's still brand new also....

For $19.99, its not a bad little tool at all :)

Nice review! I didn't know that Schrade had put out a multitool. I love multi's so of course I'll have to pick one up to "compare" it with my other ones. Also, I just love Schrade knives! I once went on a school field trip to their factory in Ellenville, NY (I'm from Kingston, not far away), and have been a fan ever since. Gotta love the old timer!! Thanks again for the review. -Rick

I've had one of these for about a year and carry it on and off. I like the compact size and it suits me very well for belt carry. The shears on mine have performed very well and I used them last summer to cut the pant legs off my painter's pants in an emergency shorts conversion situation. Perhaps the quality control varies a bit.

Haven't carried the tool for a little while but it just may find itself with me today! Thanks for the good review.

I got one for my 8 year old son last year because I thought it looked pretty save for a boy his age. He loves it. I have tinkered with it a little bit, and think it's pretty handy. The knife blade could have been beveled on both edges instead of chisel ground, and the geometry of the philips screwdriver could be a little better (it doesn't seem to work on a #1 or larger philips), but overall it's a very nice little tool.

I'm liking it a lot since its been on my belt. Now I do admit, there aren't a heap load of occasions that I whip it out, but for the first week when i put it through the introductory paces the Tough Chip did well. Fun to play with too :)

Thanks for all the good information...I love my little LM Micra.., but I'll have to look at one of these...looks like a great gift too!

Another little feature to this tool is the fact that you can open the sheath and remove the tweezers without having to take out the whole tool and open it. A big plus for those of us who are splinter prone.

Nice review!
It did very well in my scissor comparison too (in fact it won).

Good luck,
Allen.
