I am trying to identify a knife I was asked to create new scales for. It appears to be a Schrade Trapper of some kind.

On one side the blade says:

Schrade
Walden
N.Y. U.S.A.

On the other side it says:
29BY or 298Y or 293Y

It is very old with much rust. It looks like an old trapper I used to have that had yellow scales. The bolsters on this knife appear to be nickel and it had two brass rivets at each end of the scales with a brass pin in the center.

Before trying to make new scales, I thought I might be able to get something already from an existing knife or find replacements parts. Don't know if that is possible.

Any help would be appreciated.

If it's a Trapper, it should be a 293Y.

Came out in the late 50's early 60's I believe and were made into the 70's.

Thanks,

I have never made anything for anyone else and I really want this to be nice, so if I could find some intact scales, I could use them for a pattern. The guy I am doing this for might be satisfied if I could simply find some replacements and that would be good, but I was hoping to make some out of bone or stag.

For what's it's worth, Taylor Cutlery contracted some "remakes" of some of these yellow handled Schrade-Waldens, made by Camillus.

The scales for them might fit, if they would sell them to the public?

It sure looks like it's "seen the elephant", but that's the cool thing about old knives like that, been there, done it and still working!
