I am trying to identify a knife I was asked to create new scales for. It appears to be a Schrade Trapper of some kind.

On one side the blade says:

Schrade
Walden
N.Y. U.S.A.

On the other side it says:
29BY or 298Y or 293Y

It is very old with much rust. It looks like an old trapper I used to have that had yellow scales. The bolsters on this knife appear to be nickel and it had two brass rivets at each end of the scales with a brass pin in the center.

Before trying to make new scales, I thought I might be able to get something already from an existing knife or find replacements parts. Don't know if that is possible.

I originally posted this in another forum, but tobyrogers suggested posting it here.

I wonder if it might be a 296Y?? That is the number for the full size trapper with the yellow handles. I got a new in box Schrade + not too long ago on eBay, and I imagine they will come up from time to time even now. The only thing on eBay right now is the orange handle version. If you are just looking for a parts knife then flea markets or garage sales would be a good place to look. Some of the guys here on the forum might even have the parts you're looking for.

Scott,
I show two possibilities in the numbers I have. Like Paul said a 296Y or possibly a 293Y. Both are trapper patterns. The way you might be able to tell is by the length. The 296Y is 4-1/8" closed and the 293Y is 3-7/8" closed.
Post a picture if you can.

Hope this helps,
Dale

Dale,

I haven't ever uploaded a picture here, but I will try. Will have to learn how first.

I haven't figured out how to post a picture, so here is a link to a page where you can see a close up. I have learned through all this that the digital camera is better than my eyes. It seems pretty clear to me that the number in question is a 3. You can't really see the 2 because of the angle of the light in this picture, but the first two numbers are definitely 29. I only had question about the 3rd number. From the picture I'm reasonably certain it is a 3, making this knife a 293Y.

Scott,
I agree it sure looks like a 293.
If you redo it please let us see the end product.
Great knives deserve a second chance.
Thanks

i have the 293 also its the best knife i have so far, its mint i dont think it ever been carried or shapened it has the yellow handle. i love this knife, i would like to see a picture also if you do any thing to it it is a great knife

The father of a close friend asked me to make new "handles" for it. I am really a novice. I have assembled two kit knives. That is all. However, I had shown them to him and he must have thought they were OK since he asked me to work on this one. I will post picture when I'm done.

I am a criminal defense attorney with active practice in two counties, and I have a 6 week-old son, so spare time is almost non-existent.
