Hey guys, I know that there is and will continue to be a lot of love for this "Jessica X", and a lot of hate.
And I know that what happened between Chris Tanner and us Beckerheads will probably never die.
With such a divisive topic, how could I resist doing a YouTube video review!?
Scratch that, and ENTIRE SERIES.
I personally like Chris Tanner.
I won't say yet whether or not I like this knife.

What I will say is that this YouTube series is going to be FUN!

I will start work on the series next week, and it will probably consist of up to 5 videos, and take me a few months to complete.

My channel is Thepreppersbunkeroutdoors, and some of you may remember my Battle of the Budget Choppers.
I learned a LOT while doing that series, and I guarantee that this one will be better.
Love it or hate it, I hope for this to be like a train wreck.

Personally, I don't think it's a good idea to compare knives, or put one up against another. All knives perform differently even when in the same design class. There's a LOT of heat where you're headed with this one. Good luck with that.

Just seeeing the 21 next to Jessica X makes me giggle. Its kindof like looking at a Loaded Springfield M1A next to a musket, they are both guns, and both about the same size.... but ummm .....lol

There's a thread from a couple months ago ,with same topic, quite controversial
04cbec960b850d670eb420c4c7af0355.jpg
good luck with this one.

Comparing knives is what I do.
I know that the heat will come.
But I just can't stand standalone knife reviews.
It always goes like this "this thing is pretty good at everything!"
Yeah? Compared to what?
I love comparing things, and for me, that is where I find strengths and weaknesses.
So I'm ready for it :-)

I know, that that thread didn't have them all in hand to go head to head at various tasks in a controlled environment. As controlled as I can make it at least.

[And I know that what happened between Chris Tanner and us Beckerheads will probably never die.

...........I personally like Chris Tanner.

I must have missed something big. I went back through Chris' posts and didn't see any blow-ups, but whatever. I like Chris too (from what I know of him), and while his presentation style is different than mine would be, HE is out there filming, while I'm on the couch just watching the vids.

The knife design however, looks like Chris meeting his goal of designing something that hasn't been done before. Thinking that far out of the box can go one of two ways. I'll watch your videos and see what you discover.

uh.....I just can't stop chuckling. That girl Jessica must have had quite a big, um.....boo-tay. Some things I don't have to try on to know that they just ain't gonna fit. Might still watch the youtube vid. I'm still waiting for the test of a certain custom gripped CS chopper of which you might know the whereabouts.

Wonderful.

Well, since Jacob decided to throw gas on the fire, I think it's time we cleared the air. I've read the other thread full of personal attacks from people that have never met me. That's fine. I've been at this for over 3 years, and if there is one thing I know for certain, not everyone is going to like you.

However, there seems to be a L-O-T of half-truths, filling in the blanks, and twisted words going around. I had someone comment on a video the other day stating some of this, so I know it ain't right. So I'll set the record straight. From what I have gathered, there are about 4 things that seem to be sticking points. So lets address those.

ISSUE #1: "CHRIS TANNER THINKS HE'S GOING TO 'IMPROVE' ETHAN BECKERS DESIGN, OR MAKE SOMETHING BETTER"

This is the first one because this one is the most maddening to me. Talk about twisting words. I wanted to give Ethan CREDIT for inspiring me. I didn't "take his design" or "change his design". The one, and only thing those two knives have in common is a 9" blade of roughly the same height. THAT'S IT. I didn't make a combat knife. But I wanted to come up with something that is totally new...something that takes a straight 9" blade but will do different things based on how to hold it. And it you add a 8" angled handle, it IS going to chop harder. But they are nowhere near the same...not even close. In fact, I went out of my way to make sure even the blade was much different. Thickness, grind height, angle of grind, 90 degree spine, no forward swedge. The differences go on and on. But the Becker BK9 was my inspiration, and I will continue to say that because it's true. And I do NOT see how that is wrong, when I made a completely different tool. Anyone that holds both knives at the same time and thinks that they are ANYTHING alike is reeeeeeeally reaching. There isn't a knife maker or designer alive that does not have influences and inspirations.

ISSUE #2: "CHRIS TANNER CALLED THOSE SCHRADE KNIVES 'BECKER KILLERS'"

OK, I did say that, and those were some incredibly stupid words. I later did other videos and said "No". But let me first explain what I meant by that. When you have a knife channel, you get 10 messages a day asking for help choosing a knife. And at the time, I was heavily pushing Ka-Bar/Becker. But I have a LARGE contingent of budget buys that say they just cannot afford a $75 knife. When those knives came out, They were 1095 and had sharp 90 degree spines. I got excited. FINALLY!! Something I can recommend to these budget guys. They were built for the WOODS, not for combat. I was BIG on the 90 degree spine thing at the time (I go back and forth). They only required stripping the horrid coating. But after much use, I just decided I still liked my Beckers more, even if I had to spend time modding them. So I apologize for that. I don't script, I just turn on the camera and start talking. But that WAS an understandable reason for people to be pissed at me. BTW though...I have done unspeakable things to the new Schrade knives. They aren't the cheap crap a lot of people say they are. But personal preference and opinions ARE everyones right.

Keep in mind one thing: When you are in the business of testing and reviewing and recommending knives, you can't be a one-brand show.

ISSUE #3: "CHRIS TANNER SAID MEAN THINGS ABOUT KABAR AND ETHAN BECKER"

First off....I NEVER said ANYTHING bad about Ethan Becker!! THAT pisses ME off. But I DID get mad at Ka-Bar. Real mad. Maybe I shouldn't have, and I certainly am not anymore, but let me tell you what was going on at the time.

I had just spent a significant amount of time pushing Ka-Bar Becker to my audience. (this will tie into Issue #4). And at the time, I wasn't exactly making bank. But I WAS converting a LOT of people. Multiple people a week were emailing and PMing me pictures of their new BK7 or BK9 they got because of watching me rave about them. I wanted to help sell even more. So when I was at SHOT Show 2 years ago, Ethan introduced me to the higher-ups at Ka-Bar which flat out told me to my face "Yes, We can definitely work with you on this". All I needed was a different Becker model every so often and I would do what I could to beef up sales. I even told them "Let's wait till I get a little bigger and then we'll do this". I had about 24,000 subscribers. I waited until I had over 50,000 subscribers before contacting them again. No Reply. Then Ethan got involved and HE contacted them. He gave he the head guys email I talked to, the one that said we could work together on this.

Finally I got an email from the guy. I was a badly written form-letter that was obviously written for ever Tom, Dick , and Harry that comes along. He couldn't even take the time to address me directly and say "No, we decided not to go ahead with the Youtube thing".

After all that time pushing a company on my own because I believed in them, to have the guy do that even after the DESIGNER of the series got involved...well that felt like someone shoving a middle finger right into your nose. And yeah...I snapped. I was pissed. That felt completely disrespectful, especially when companies I have helped even less can talk to me directly. So I went on a "F*** Ka-Bar" rampage. NOT a "F*** Ethan Becker" rampage. I did not blame Ethan at all. But that was out of his hands. So I decided to stop supporting them because instead of a simple "We appreciate your support, but We're not doing test samples anymore", I got a "F*** Off"

That sucked because I was such a HUGE Ka-Bar fan. But as with all things, over time I just got over it. But at the time, I took it very personally.

SIDE NOTE(ISSUE #4): People have said "He thinks he made the BK7 popular!". Well...I DID breathe life into it. I'm sorry, but it is what it is. When I was an active forum member here, everyone was into BK2s, BK9s, and BK5s. Very few BECKERHEADS were posting about the BK7. So I came up with an experiment. I had this crazy idea to see if I could make people want it again. That is where the "Jessica" thing started. I got the idea from watching the Full Metal Jacket scene about naming your rifle. I decided to name my BK7, and joke about it and treat it like a character in a show. AND IT WORKED. I got 5-7 emails a week at one point for a good 6-7 months from viewers who just got their "Jessica" and what a great knife it was, and Thank You for recommending it!

See...my methods might be unorthodox, and they might not always make sense...but there is always a plan behind it. Especially if it's something quirky like that.

Lets see...was there something else? I don't think so. I think ISSUE #4 was the "Taking credit for the BK7 thing", but I tied that into the last part.

I've always liked Ethan Becker and Becker knives, and I always will...regardless of whether or not you guys like ME. And I will continue to support Ethan. I just started pushing the BK21, and I've even considering finally giving the BK4 a try. The BK4 is to me what Jessica-X is to you...it doesn't make sense, but I suspect if I actually TRY it and give it a chance, it will.

A lot of member posted some pretty hateful things in that last thread. And congratulations! You won! Because that thread is the first google result when you google "SCHF43". I've been advised that it is actionable, since it's full of a lot of stuff that is in no way true, and I am a business entity. But I said screw it. Sometimes you just gotta walk away.

I'm not sure what all the personal attacks are about, or why people are SO bothered by me that "I make their blood boil". Really? If that's the case, WHY watch? There are all sorts of channels I can't stand. I don't watch them. But I don't troll them either. I don't slander them, call them names, or other stuff.

What I DO do, is share my platform. How many 100K plus channels can you name that REGULARLY helps out smaller channels by letting my audience see them on MY channel? There's one such channel in here. Had less than 10 videos, yet I shared his channel to my audience, asked them to sub, gave him my time at Blade Show, and offered to do anything else he needs. Youtube is a LOT better when channels work together and aren't at each other throats, clawing at each other to be at the top of the pile.

I've said my piece. If you want to continue hating me and believing that I'm stealing something from Ethan, I can't stop you. But at least now there IS another side to the story.

Carry on....

I knew this was going to happen the moment I saw the title to this thread. There's some bad blood in this forum, and I felt like warning the op. As a fellow youtuber, I believe it's best to remain neutral when it comes to designers. This is the main reason I'd never put one knife against another. It causes things like this. Obviously, my channel is the one Chris mentioned helping out. I do appreciate his support, and do not have any personal problems with him at all. Let me also be clear in saying that I'm not posting in this thread to cause a problem. I'm simply warning of impending hostility. There are a few members here that were scorn badly. I'm not one of them, because I was on long absence at the time. If I had a problem I'd definitely state it. I will not be comparing these two knives, or any two knives for that matter. I do have a JX review video shot, and awaiting editing. They are separate, and will not be related in any way. Hopefully the flames will not get too high in this thread.

Btw, the title needs fixed. It's the schf43

CM_Rick: Damn....I didn't even catch the title thing. Good eye. Becker vs SCHF42 would be Truck Windshield vs Bug. BTW....Super Jealous of your T.M.Hunt knife. Always wanted to try that. Funny how that was the inspiration for the TOPS SXB, which like me EJ openly admits, yet everyone says it's a Tracker rip off when they are nothing alike.

Chris,

The main issue was the rant you went on about KA-BAR.
That rubbed everyone the wrong way and showed your true colors.
You don't SELL KA-BARS. They don't OWE you a damn thing.
At the end of the day you're just an egotistical YouTuber who acted like a spoiled child.

Personally, I unsubscribed after about 3 vids of you trying to pimp for Shrade.
I have nothing against Shrade. I would have been turned off no matter what company it was you were pimping.
Your egotistical attitude turns me off too.
Again, that's my opinion.
I wish you'd just go away.

Good luck on your YT channel and knife designs.

chris, I've watched your videos for awhile, and while I'm not subscribed anymore, it's just due to change of taste.

I would also like to apologize, I have said somethings in previous threads, that not matter what really went down, probably shouldn't have been said. Unfortunately, due to the type of situation this is, it's hard to know what really happened, but I would like to point out it took some balls to come in here and address everyone, and for sharing your side of it. I've found d it's really hard to form true opinions with out hearing both sides

Hey, like I said, I like Chris, and I like Ethan.
I will not be comparing designers, but knives.
I think that it's great that Chris came here to clear the air.
People will love these reviews, and they will hate them.
They will love and hate me.
They will love and hate the knives.

But in the end, good information will be on the table, and everyone will still love Ethan.
If anyone sees this thread, and it "causes" them to hate Chris or anyone else, that is their problem.

And this test will be %100 unbiased. Guaranteed.
That much will be obvious when you see it.
It will be fun for me, and hopefully it will be fun for everyone else too, Chris and Ethan included.

Knives get compared. Performance had to be quantified. Otherwise your wasting your time.

This is what I bring to YouTube, because this is what I love, and who I am.

When I am done with this test, people's feelings will be hurt, but they won't be Chris' or Ethans.

SCHF43 Jessica.... Very catchy, rolls right off the keyboard. I have been around for years but pop in and out. Sometimes my "out" lasts for a long time so I missed all the drama. I recognize the name from posts years ago but that's it, so no bias here.

But looking at that knife--well, not an attractive knife! I usually don't chose my tools based on its aesthetics but it is horrid. Again, I am unbiased not knowing the past drama, just taking a quick glance. You made enough changes to the BK 9 blade so that you can call it your own. That's cool, I agree that all blades are inspirations from prior designs.

It seems to me, however, that you saw the leverage that the BK-9 & BK-21 provide. Instead of the logical decision to put the weight and leveraging to the blade for additional power, you put it into the handle. Looks very odd to me. The useful part of the knife is the blade--the handle just allows me a way of utilizing said blade. Making it twice as long brings one further away from the functional part of the knife. Does that make it potentially less safe? Maybe. Not sure, I am certainly no engineer.

I assure you I say this with no bias but it just seems as though you saw a winning design and wanted to call it your own so you changed an aspect of the knife that didn't really need to be changed and left the winning part alone so that you could have your own line. Looks desperate, bad form.

Or, I could have it all wrong and that thing could be an absolute beast and knock the Becker line out of the water. Doubtful but if you give any piece of metal enough weight and leverage behind it it will hack through anything softer. The further it gets away from you, the faster you can swing it and the deeper the cuts will be.

I'm not getting into this - before my time, but for gods sake Chris bloody smile every now and then on your vids. Your as dry as a nuns V-Odka. (Please don't consider this an attack, merely an observation and request. I'm sure you have a lovely smile)

Still I continue to watch. Enjoy your reviews, And please get that Sheila on a bit more too.

I am considering a Jessica X though. Be interesting to see how it handles. Have to confess I am Becker bias. Love me a good BK.

the mods are watching.

do not derail the OPs post. do. not.

do not make it personal. knock it off. right now. please.

i would advise previous detractors to fix their posts.

want to whine? take it to the right sub-forum.

oh yeah, been doing this Becker love thing 30+ years? not getting paid either :D

business deals not in writing? verbal? handshake? go south? sucks, but get it in writing, that's all i can say. been p0wned myself. even with a contract.

now then. carry on with tasty knife comparisons.

which reminds me, i need a parkerized BK21 as soon as my first new paycheck clears :} been waiting for that a LONG time. longer than some of you have owned Beckers...

someone send me a SCHF43 falcata looking thingy :D respect the mods.

OK, I did say that.

...

So I went on a "F*** Ka-Bar" rampage.

Excerpts from wall of text explain all. That said, this thread is perilously close to being closed if it does not remain on point.
