Schrade Walden 165

Micheal (Codger)
Perhaps you can tell me something about mine here in pick.
I spent a little time working on it again last night as it used to have rust on it. It didnt come up too bad really. It you want it you cant have it for free. Its not perfect but probably still OK for sample. Just email me.
Kind Regards Tim

Tim, it's a first production 165UH (no, never had an etch proclaiming that) which was catalogued from 1969 to 1970, just two years. Since it seems that the UH serials on these ran consecutively, you #05069 would have been made in 1970 (no, the last two digits of your serial are just coincidental). Schrade Walden continued to ship remnants and replacements from this run for several years after dropping them from the catalogs. Since you've been removing rust, you know it is 1095HC steel. The second production was 440C (1994-97) and lacked the thumbgrooves on the top of the choil. The second also used the "bomb" UH sig shield (like on the 897UH) rather than the oblong sig shield of the first production knives. Third production was shieldless, mostly reserved for SFOs.

The knife made debut magazine appearances as early as August of 1968. In these magazine ads, the knife was named “Pro Hunter” instead of the later “Prospector”, and featured the high carbon steel blade of the Old Timer series

Oh yeah, your serial is recorded in my research archive.

Yeah unfortunately the pitting on it was small in area but deep due to age and I could not see it properly until I received it and actually starting working on it.
Eventually i had to use a machine to get pitting out but was so deep I had to remove alot of material which actually slightly altered the shape of blade in one section.
Its not really worth much because of this and I would not sell it (even though this doesnt show in a pic) in the next few days I think I may get the angle grinder on to it and do some customizing of my own (if you know what I mean??) then Ill put it on ebay just for a laugh.
I wish it were an nice mint sample, Oh well !!
Cheers Tim

You know Tim, we all appreciate mint examples. But a collector who turns everything else away has both a lot of time on his hands and incredably deep pockets. Very few NIB early Schrades are really perfect. If that is what a collector strives for, then that is fine. Personally, I'd rather have more knives, a wider spread of patterns and SFOs, than a few perfect ones. Put a crocus finish back on that one and the wavyness won't be so apparent. Yeah, tell it is refinished if you sell it, but in the meantime, enjoy it! There was only one knife made with that serial number, and you own it!

yes I guess your right, its alot better than it was when I purchased it, 1970 is early.
These really are a nice knife, even my wife liked it, and thats saying alot, conservative but still very nice. You can put a tick next to the 05069 on your list??
Cheers Tim
