Was wondering approx. year this was Mfg ?
Serial No. 22170.
I'm guessin it's carbon steel?
Although I've been told that some early Schrade/Walden's were stainless.
Thanks for any help Fella's.

1973seems to be the general consensus based on several past threads of the 171UH. A search will reveal the several indepth discussions about your question as well as the other versions of the 171UH as well.

Lots of great pictures of the various versions including a few not marked Schrade.:D hurry though before the pictures are lost to the great Internet image black hole never to be seen again. Well there is always the collectors site.

I acquired an almost mint 73' 171uh in box with unused sheath several years ago. No paper work unfortunately. One of the favorites in my small collection, it's the swedge that does it for me.

Oh and yes carbon steel.

Thanks fat city....Schrade's are very hard IMO to track due to so many mfg variations.

Aw sheesh, it's 1973 not 1972.

Sorry zakjak221. I went back and looked at the print out of the thread I had from a few year back.:(

Ugh sorry bout that.

As the SW tang marking was discontinued in 1973, given the high serial, 1972 production is more likely I think.

Per your request zakjak

FYI there is no specific serial number polling that I have found. Codger or someone else might have posted the yearly production numbers somewhere but I'm not inclined to go looking currently.

Here is a couple to get you started that I saved as favorites.

Codger_64, tobyrogers, Rusty1 all have great threads and posts about the 171.

So now I'm confused again about the dates on the squared handled Schrade Walden 171UH. Oh well.:(

The birdshead pommel was changed after the first few years of production. Our friend "Toby Rogers" had a passion for them and I believe he had several and likely posted the serials in some of those threads. And production numbers were likely posted as well.

I just recieved my first 171 and have been trying to research it a bit. I am somewhat disquieted by the fact that the swedge is fully sharpened. I haven't noticed this on any of my other Schrades. Can anyone tell me if this is normal for this model? The grind is very even and professional looking, but the grind lines on the swedge are parallel to the spine, unlike the main body where they are perpendicular. Thanks, Rtmind/Randy
