Nice job on the shield. Not pinned, but flush with the handle surface. Great action, no wobble. Touches of pepper spots here and there. Guessing it was made in the time right before 1958 when the switch was made to Delrin.

:)

Delrin may of been a good thing business wise, but looking back what a shame that had to happen. How could they!! Especially when you look and feel a knife as nice as that in the hand. Good find Hal!! Even the grind on the main blade seems much more acute than ones on later KON-KAV blades.:thumbup:

Hal that is a beautiful knife. I am looking for one also, it doesn't have to be bone just new condition.

Nice find Hal! When you say "not pinned", I take it you are referring to the shield? I don't recall seeing any that were? (Pinned, that is.)

Bruce:

No, the shield is not pinned. They pined them after 1946 (and before of coure) but I do not know when they stopped. Sometimes you can see the pin showing through the surface of the shield (like a bolster pin)

Hi thawk,
I have some mint Schrade Walden 881s and two 880 KON-KAV knives in their tubes. However the handles look to be Delrin. When did Schrade change over to Delrin from Bone...Ken

Ken - I think around 1957-58 they switched to almost all composite materials (they had always done some), but before they used Delrin, they used a few others. If you look at the catalogs from the late 50's, they started using the term "stagged" rather than bone stag. I'd like to know what pattern got the first Delrin handles, and when that was.
