Hello Schrade collectors, I was wondering how common (or uncommon) is the SW 225 in real bone on the handle? I got lucky in a lot I bought a little while back, cleaned it up and love it! Very sharp blades, I carefully run them on a stone then honed, incredibly sharp! I just never see any around it seems....

Yes, there are a few with bone handles, but hard to find. The 225 was first produced in 1953, but even then, the catalogs listed them as "stagged" rather than bone stag, so I have to believe most of them are composite. That would be a nice big slab of bone on those handles. Sure would like to see a picture of it. I know Rusty has shown one before, and it is a beauty.

I have a cell phone pic, but will try and get a better one posted soon. Thanks for the info though.

Thanks for the comp Hal! I was pleased to pick this one up for fair price, would love to get some more for the collection. I have also added a Herman Williams stag handled 225.

That JC Higgins is a knife that is etched in my mind Rusty. Wonderful 225H. Glad to see it again.

Thats exactly the way my bone looks on one side, the other is quite faded, a lot of red gone, but still real nice looking. I will post soon as i remember!

Those are some lovely examples and great photography. I am a little short in both departments, but I thought these pics would add to the conversation. The first pic shows another bone example of a Schrade Walden and an earlier Cutco.

The second pic shows the 6 pin early version. This one has only 4 of the pins installed, but I have another with all 6 pins. These handles are a synthetic; I believe it may be what the old catalogs called "fibestos."

Here are two of the early sheaths from that time, and the "gaucho" sheath that accompanied the Buffalo Bill liner-lock hunter.
