I have a Schrade walden honesteel with the original box, sheath, and paperwork. It is marked Pat. Pend. so by my research I believe this is a 1972. Does anyone know how much this is worth in today's value?

Sorry. Check ended ebay auctions.

Those Schrade walden hone-steel sold for $11 back in the 1970's, and by the mid 1980's they had almost doubled in price.

I realize this thread is almost a year old. With that, do you still have the Schrade Walden Honesteel & sheath? If so, do you have any photos, and is it for sale?

To Codger_64: While I'm here I'd like to say thank you for the information you have posted in the past on the Schrade products. It has been very helpful to me to say the least, and I'm sure to many other knife enthusiasts as well. I'm a recent owner of a couple of Sharpfinger knives and found your info on them after the fact. The first one I bought for under $20 and is worn down at the blade and handle but continues to be very useful. The second one I bought because once I had the knife in my hand it was everything I thought is was and more. However, I noticed the point was blunt compared to other newer ones and shorter by about 5/32" from the originals. So, I went in search of and found a "new old stock" for $49.99.

Since then I've bought three Schrade Sharpfinger sheaths separately and dyed one, burnished it and it came out sweet looking to fit the color of the handles, especially the new/old one. Not only are these knives great for everything that you have mentioned but, they are the best for self-defense as well. With an extensive background in one of only a couple of well rounded, ancient combat art forms designed for real life situations - not for sport or competition -, I find these knives to be THE most well designed knife for self-defense purposes as well.

I have a small collection of knives, from daggers to Kukris (including the Condor) to Sambar stag handle, made in Solingen, Germany ("The City of Knives") Bowie(s) and one large Skinner. When I first saw the smaller size Schrade Sharpfinger my heart sank. I immediately felt that I had found THE knife for me. The ergonomic design of the grip and up-swept blade that keeps the point of the blade centered with the rest of the knife makes this knife a definite all purpose knife and then some. The knowledge that you have shared with us is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Welcome to the forums SolWarrior! First I should mention that our rules preclude solicitation and sales here. We do have sale/trade/exchange subforums but you will need to read the rules there as well.

I am pleased that you are satisfied with the Sharpfinger. You know now why it has been a favorite of mine for many years. As for self defense use, Nemo and Fred Perin did an article on it years ago. It was online but I have lost the link. I've never had to actually use the Sharpfinger defensively, but I can say I feel a bit better prepared when I have one on my belt, as I do now. I have a small variety of customs based on the Sharpfinger design, and likewise a few custom sheaths. I hope to have another made before too long, nothing super fancy, but one which holds the knife in the small of my back parallel to my belt, concealed until needed, strong side draw. I think that is workable. The small footprint should make it unnoticible when driving or moving about.

Hello, Codger, and thank you for the warm welcome! Thanks for the heads up on the rules as well. My apologies to Bladeforums.com on that. As always, everywhere I go I never bother to read any rules. I simply do what comes natural to me and then find out the hard way if I've crossed any guidelines. I guess it's just the deep down inside untamed person in me. The parallel sheath to belt design sounds Awesome! But then there's sticks to worry about when carrying a knife, and a gun when carrying a stick. Not sure what the laws are nationwide but down here in Texas open carry became legal just a few months ago.

I have an old axe handle that I prefer over any formal stick type weapon of the past as with the "bo" (6ft.X1in. stick) or the "jo" (4ft.X1in. stick) usually made from oak. Japanese history says it has blocked the katana (samurai sword) dead in its tracks in battle and with Japan "greatest samurai warrior. However, my old axe handle is short at just 32" and shaped just right. Feels natural in my hand and can be wield one-handed with ease, freeing up the other hand for whatever. ;)

I have some olive green kydex sheets to make sheaths with if I choose to but, just cannot bring myself to cross kydex with a Sharpfinger knife. I may make one for the Condor Kukri but not for a Sharpfinger. It's just doesn't feel right. :) It's got to be leather.

Thanks again - Felix

Fatcity67, Hello! Thanks for the link to Codger's read on Honesteel but I've already read it.. ...and bookmarked it too! I'm currently looking at one - the "Type 2" with the teardrop hole on it - on a popular bidding site. I won't go any further than that as I don't know the rules on this as of yet either. :D - Peace!

I know what you mean about Kydex and the Sharpfinger. It would be natural for the 152OTX, but not the 152OT. I do have a ballistic nylon sheath that I sometimes use canoeing. Just because it dries quicker when wet. That one came with an import copy of the X-timer... Winchester I think. But if I have another custom made, it will be leather and not a lot different in design from the stock sheaths, just adapted for a different carry.

These days I don't worry a lot about people with rock, scissors or paper. Or sticks. I do carry one of Bill Ruger's inventions in an Elmer Keith size and I am competent and confident in my abilities with it. Keith, as you might know, lived in Salmon Idaho, just a few miles North of here.

 @ SolWarrior.

I got rapped across the knuckles once or twice.

Good luck on your quest.

Sorry about getting so far away from honesteel topic, but, Codger, do you remember the Elmer Keith-size fixed blades that he designed? I don't remember who made them, but they were a real hog of a knife. As I recall, they were a little like the 171UH. Oh... and we do love our Rugers, don't we?

There were several including one for G&A magazine. But the most populous one was a Gil Hibben creation.

Who the actual maker for the Keith/Hibben knife was, I haven't a clue. Production seems to have been too high to have been Hibben's actual work.

Hello again, Codger: Your comment on the cross-draw sheath for the 152OT that you had made as lingered on since. I did a search for one and found zero. I'm wondering where you get yours made? Also does the blade edge face down or up and if they come with a keeper strap and snap button as well? I guess a picture of it with the knife in it would explain better. I found a nice one for the 15OT but costly at $44+ shipped. Not really looking for anything bulky or to pay more than what I did for the knives. I've seen some for other type knives with huge bulky belt strap which went from front to back. I guess it's great for wearing in any direction but kind of defeats other purposes. Thanks.

In the past my custom sheaths have been made by Paul Long, PFL Leather. He goes by "Sheathmaker" on the forum. But don't expect to get a professionally made custom sheath for $40. There is some guy on eBay who is selling a variety of sheaths made to fit Sharpfingers. I can't speak as to the quality of his work but they don't look bad from the pictures. I've not had a crossdraw made yet. Here are a pair of Paul's sheaths. Herman Oak vegetable tanned leather, doe skin lined, hand tooled with hornback alligator inserts.

Those are some fancy sheaths. Thanks for sharing. I'm just looking for some plain cowhide, no handmade tooled designs, just something that keeps the knife secure in the cross-draw position. I've done an eBay search of Sharpginger sheaths and came up empty. I'll keep looking and if by chance I find someone who makes them I will let you know since you don't have yours yet. Thanks again, buddy!

Will do. I found one on eBay. It's too bulky and fancy for my taste though, but you might like it. $29.99 free shipping and may have the option to flip over to fit on the belt from both sides (you can ask). Simply type in "Schrade custom sharpfinger sheath" and you'll see it; a handmade, light olive green with hand tooled designs. Currently typing from my cell but will go to my laptop to search on here. Didn't know it was an option for me. Thanks.

Hello again, I did a small search earlier yesterday and found one guy - Horsewright maybe? - who makes more or less what I seek in cross-draw sheaths. Plain yet beautiful natural tan sheaths but, when I went to his site it says that we must send our knife in to get the sheath done to fit the knife. Well, I haven't had these Sharpfingers for very long at all and I just can't seem to part with them just yet. I pretty much have them with me at all times. Ha. Maybe I'll eventually come across someone who knows and has a Schrade USA 152 Sharpfinger who will make a perfectly fitted sheath similar to what I saw/want.

Anyway, getting back a bit closer to the original thread that I seem to have hi-jacked - My Schrade Honesteel arrived on Friday and it's exactly as you described - minus the leather thong and clamp - which I copied and pasted here:

"Type 2
Stamp: SCHRADE over HS-1 PAT. NO. Over D-227,733
Sheath Stamp: SCHRADE over OLD TIMER over HONESTEEL
Thong: Clamped
Holes: 1 teardrop
Bevel: Double"

I tried it out on my first Sharpfinger that's worn down from sharpening by the previous owner, losing about 5/32" in length in the process - but still a classic in every way, shape or form - and got it razor sharp in a few minutes. The edge got shiny in no time so, I sensed that it was doing its job and in no time it shaved hairs off my arm. The Honesteel is in prefect condition and the sheath is not far from it. Something I did not know about it is that it has rounded edges with the striated surface as well so, can be used like one would use a rod too. Very cool!

The NOS Sharpfinger is next. It is factory sharpened with rough burrs throughout the edge. It has some big ones near the point as far as burrs go. It might need a little time on a stone first yet, now that I have the right tool I know I can and will be able to get it smoothed out and shiny all the way through. The information that you have shared with everyone on Sharpfingers, HS-1 Honesteel, etc., as been lots of help to me personally. Thanks.

PS - Been trying to post for several days ( 6 ) and get rejected with a "Error 524 - A timeout occurred" notice. Something that occurs often on this site? I finally did it in sections and that allowed to me to post this, hence the double postings which were done with five edits.

Posts #7 through current (including mine) have absolutely nothing to do with the original post.
