I recently acquired two Schrade Walden pocketknives with yellow and brown swirled handles. Both are unsharpened min condition in clear plastic boxes with sharpening instructions on the insides of the boxes. Does anyone know what this handle material is or how much these knives are worth. One is a two blade jack and the other is a three blade stockman. Pattern numbers: 234K & 896K.

It´s probably celluloid, the pattern known as "butter and molasses". I´ve seen some on ebay, mostly the 896 stockman, you can also try the Bernard Levine forum for info.

Depending upon the age of these knives (when they were made during the Schrade Walden era) they could be celluloid (earlier) or delrin (later). In mint condition, the older celluloids are worth about $60 to $80 each. The newer delrin, about 1/3 of that.

These must be composition, as I have owned several cellouid knives in the past and these definately don't have that look. To see the pictures go to the page in the link, and click on Schrade Walden in the left frame.

Schrade Walden Knives

These knives were made under all 3 Schrade tangs the early ones ( Schrade Cut Co were all in celluloid ( sometimes they called it pyralin ). The # of the 243K was 2344AC. In any event after (1946 Approx) all of these were referred to just as K Horn That is why they have a K on the end of the model number. When they moved from Walden around 58 they began looking for less expensive safer materials to substitute for handles they for the most part replaced the cell handles for these with a swirled delrin they also called that delrin K Horn. You will find Schrade Waldens (tang 46-72 approx) in both materials under this tang. Usually the Cell versions were made pre 58 in Walden while the delrin version was made post 58 in Ellenville. They continued to make the delrin version under the plain Schrade label after 1972 when Schrade Walden tang was discontinued. Even with out the picture the dead give away was the plastic box you mention and is shown these came into use in the late 50 tys. The prices quoted are pretty close. Attached you will find some pics of both types of knives. I hope this helps. LT
