Respected chamber of all-things-knives wizards,

Mine is a rather simple couple of questions regarding Schrade:

1) What was the year when Schrade blades no longer carried the Walden stamp...?
2) I've seen what apparently are recently made Schrade Walden knives. Are these "new Walden" knives new indeed...? If they are, what's the deal with them...?
3) I think I've read something about Smoky Mountain having the copyright for Schrade Walden, is that so...? If so, how does that work...? Is SM issuing the "new" Walden knives...?
4) Finally, if there is such thing as new Waldens, how do they compare to the old ones?

Thank you kindly for reading and for your responses.

Here is a thread with the Schrade tang stamp chart.
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=786144
Unfortunately, it was compiled before the bankruptcy and takeover of the Brand. There are a lot of Chinese, and U.S. made knockoffs, not considered collectible by the boys I hang out with.
To know which is which, you would have to read a bunch of threads in the Schrade forum, and be cautious not to pay too much for sometimes inferior knives.
I personally won't have the new ones in my house.

Respected chamber of all-things-knives wizards,

Mine is a rather simple couple of questions regarding Schrade:

1) What was the year when Schrade blades no longer carried the Walden stamp...? 1973-74, Schrade Walden Stamps were from 1946 to 1973.

2) I've seen what apparently are recently made Schrade Walden knives. Are these "new Walden" knives new indeed...? If they are, what's the deal with them...? Taylor LLC has license rights to the Schrade Walden name.

3) I think I've read something about Smoky Mountain having the copyright for Schrade Walden, is that so...? If so, how does that work...? Is SM issuing the "new" Walden knives...? SMKW has some exclusive editions of the new Schrade Walden knives. I think through a deal with Taylor.

4) Finally, if there is such thing as new Waldens, how do they compare to the old ones? For the new SMKW exclusives only:

Actually they look and feel good, and the few I've seen have decent fit and are fairly sharp out of the tin. But the durability, quality of materials, and edge holding capabilities I can't speak to. I got a couple because of the old patterns they decided to duplicate.

I do not try to compare the quality to the knives from the Walden era because the fit and finish of old Waldens was tremendous, plus the old ones were hand made. But the "new ones" not bad at all for the price.

Thank you kindly for reading and for your responses.

A much detailed and rational answer, to balance my rabid statements.
Thanks Mr. T-hawk!

Freaking awesome response. This place ROCKS my world. Hawk, special thanks to you.

Walden was a company, that also made hand tools.
Any relation between Walden the tool company, and Schrade Walden the knife makers?

Steve

That is a post 2004, made by Bear & Sons. You can tell by the packaging and the single rivet handle construction. There were Schrade Walden knives Taylor contracted to Camillus, Bear & Sons, GEC, and Utica. Makes the old ones hard to determine at first.

I see Cal beat me to the punch. :D

Yellow ones with an etch are usually remakes too. If they are bone and in a Schrade box or tube, that usually means it is not old too.

The problem with this knife thing is that one starts learning and it never ends. Thank you, guys, for your enlightenment.

You are correct, it never ends. Fortunately there are quite a few folks here that have almost endless knowledge, and they are very willing to help.

Not sure if you have found them yet, but in the manufacturers forum, there are Camillus and a Schrade subforums. Lots of great reading in both of those

Ooops, didn't know a Schrade sub-forum existed. Thank you. I ought to gone there from the start.

No problem. They are at the very bottom of the listings in the Manufacturers forum.
I think Charlie has so many great pics posted there, you could look at them for weeks  A lot of them are knives most of us will never be fortunate enough to see anywhere else

Same people hang here too:thumbup:

Let's send this over to the den of the Schrade experts to determine if knives being offered are authentic or not...

Hard to confirm that it is bone. Nice looking. Do you have any more pictures?
Hal is better at identifying bone vs. delrin! Hal??

Looks delrin to me. The jigging on the bone always seems to me to be more pointed than round. The bone also seems to be a tighter pattern than the delrin. Good looking matchstriker though!
