I saw this KNIFE WORLD article, and decided I needed the Schrade version of one of these workhorse knives. Got the one shown, the Schrade-Walden model 163 'Navy Rope Knife' for under $9. I've read that most sailors knives had blunt ends to prevent them from being used as stabbing weapons. I dunno, though. The blade did need to be big and bad, to withstand being placed on a rope and hit (the back of the blade) with something. Cocobolo wood handles that still smell like wood.

Here is a knife described as an Olsen OK fishing knife. 'toothpick' style, of course, so it caught my attention. Described as a model 109. OLsen made knives (here in Michigan) but also imported some from Germany. I think that this one is actaully a Schrade-Walden model 209 fishing knife (bail has been lost) merely sold by Olsen. The second photo is one of those S/Ws out of my collection for comparison.

Hey Phil,

That fish knife looks just like the one I have, same missing bail and everything, however mine is a schrade walden and marked as so.

I think I have one of those rope knives. I'll have to look.

Nice pics, it's good to see some "variety" .

Oh yeah, missed the statement about the stabbing weapons. I believe that you are correct, more or less. The way I had heard it was that, being on a ship, and being tossed to and fro on the waves, a pointy object was not the most desirable thing to be holding as you were sliding across the deck into your shipmate. So they had those rounded off blades. The same blades you see on the marlin-spike knives as well.

Just my .02

Yeah, Glenn, I thought it was time someone showed off some older Schrades; We've been discussing the most recent ones made-- the last one-- and our collective scrambling around to pick them up. I thing struck me as I was researching the rope & fishing knives: How many different models old-time knife companies carried. Dozens, I think in some cases (Schrade, Case, Remington) hundreds.

LT!!!! YA GOT any of the these Flat End hawkbills, pruners, rope knives to show us?

As per the blunt ends, your points make good sense. I have seen 'lifeboat' knives with blunt ends as well, so as not to drop the knife and cause the obvious problem.
