So I have a list of different patterns that I want to get. I recently retired my 34OT since it was my first knife, and it has alot of sentimental value (that and I lost it once before). So seeing as I need to refill my stockman space, and I like larger knives, I figured I'd go for an 8OT if I could find one for a decent price. What do you all think or suggest instead of that? I was also looking at one of the new Buck slipjoints.

I found a used 8OT on eBay for around $15 and I love it. Carbon steel blades that get wicked sharp, three useful blade profiles, and an unbeatable price for that kind of quality. I think the Delrin handles are just fine and I even like the old-time look of it. My father carried a SAK as long as I've known him, but he used a knife like this in the garden. The size is just fine with me for carrying it in a pants or shorts pocket and I don't ever think of it as too large.

I was looking at a Rough Rider at the time when someone here mentioned that older, USA-made Old Timers were going really cheap on eBay and I've been really happy about that advice ever since.

A U.S.A. made 80T is an awesome knife. It stands up very well in a front pocket, and the blades are to die for. Great size too.

$15!?!?! OOOH I envy you. The cheapest I've seen so far is 30. Great price, just gonna wait around a bit more and hope to get a steal. And I agree Buzz, it is to die for. Great knives all around.

I recently inherited an 80T and have really grown to appreciate/love it (its in my EDC rotation now and has a nice patina going for it). Plus I really fancy its long match strike pulls:D

I got an 8OT two years ago from an antique shop locally. I wouldn't trade it for anything; it's an incredible user with great steel. If i was reduced to the proverbial 'What's the one knife you's keep...' it would probably be this one.

I've found several Stockman's from various mfrs. that are around the same size. I have about eight right now.

thx - cpr

Here's the original: 1961 was the first year of production for the 8OT and the only year it was available in bone (other than some much later special editions). It was definitely one of Schrade's all time best sellers.

I'd suggest finding an 8OT in good shape on a popular online auction site and pulling the trigger. Where I think the Old Timers (and of course here I'm talking about the real Old Timers, the ones made by Schrade in the U.S.) have a leg up on the Bucks is their flat-grind blade profile. I'm not a huge fan of the hollow grind Buck puts on their slipjoints. IMO, flat ground makes for a better slicer.

Not long ago, an older and wiser collector said to me: "Don't lament you didn't win a auction another will 'Always' come around eventually." I understood and had hope but eventually is a variable time unit.....three or four years later and I am still waiting.

You like OTs, you like Carbon, go find one and stay with it. If you just can never find one and are still thinking about a Buck, then get back in touch with me. If eventually turns out to be a long time, a little bird sat in a bush and sang me a song of possible premium steel and scales on Buck slipjoints within a couple of years.........but don't repeat that...........300Bucks

Hmmm buck slipjoints with premium steel and scales i.e. bone...I'd jump on that in a quick second. As for the waiting thing, I'm in no rush. Like you were told, There is always another, you just have to wait for it.

The 8OT is a great knife. For non Schrade large stockmans check out older "store brand" knives on evilbay. They will usually get less bids, and have a lower winnig price.Yet are still made by America's larger knife makers.

This 1960's Craftsman isn't an auction find, but I picked it up for a mere $20 since it "is only a Sears knife". Made by Ulster with nice carbon blades and beautifull bone.

But my favorite large stockman is this 20's to 30's Boker.:)

I've won a few auctions for these carbon U.S. Made Schrades, and they're worth it if the price is good, but I still find these at old hardware stores, flea markets, etc. I can't pass up an 8OT sized Stockman. I'm weak that way. :)

That would get my attention PDQ. All the new premium steels are cool, but I really have no use for them. I neither like nor dislike them; they're mostly just 'alphabet soup' to me.

- BUT -

If Buck were to bring us a line with good premium material, worked up by Mr. Bos, I'd be on that real quick. Real quick. (Anybody from Buck listening?)

Well friends, I have one coming my way. Its used, not that I mind, has good snap and no blade play. Just like I am used to from the USA Schrades. And to boot, I got it from a fellow forumite here. Good times are coming.

I carry this one every weekend a love it. by the way not my picture.
