I figured I'd start a new thread for this one. Another thread asks if you'd pay $$$ for a good looking junk knife. The overwhelming response is no, and I'd agree.

Now, would you pay $$$ for a fantasy piece made for dispay only?

I know the huge majority of people here are "users", and fantasy has very little place in thier collections. For me though, I've always been a huge sci-fi/fantasy fan. Books, movies, tv, anything dealing with it I have some of.
I have to Official Highlander sword from the tv series. 440 steel made by Marto in Toledo, Spain. Not exactly a total POS, but by no means a heavy user either. :) At least it's not one of the hundreds of cheaper knock-offs available. There are a few distinctive differences thta make it stand out.
I have a sword I bought from The Noble Collection. Pure fantasy sword. No "practical" value, but I love it hanging on the wall as a display piece. It wasn't cheap by any means.
I also own 2 Gil Hibben daggers.

On the flip side, I own 16 Benchmade knives, a MT auto, and a couple other knives, so quality in a user is important to me. Anyone else feel the same? Anyone else buy something strictly for display?

I have a dark confession to make...I like this Sabertooth Dagger and I'm thinking about buying it...please forgive me :(

RL,

Don't feel bad, I have this one. And it was worth the little bit of money I spent on it :)

If my wife would let me have one, I'd probably have picked up "Sting" from the Lord of the Rings movie a long time ago. No, it's not the greatest thing, but I am a HUGE fan of the book The Hobbit, and I just think it'd be neat. Besides that, its the only one out of all the other swords that I've seen from the Lord of the Rings movies to actually have any character to it. So, another dark confession is made. I won't apologize for it though, I'm proud of my fantasy knife tendencies. Besides, its not like I'm advocating FRANKLIN MINT (<gasp> ) here or anything!

You are aware, of course, that making such a purchase would immediately raise the issue of impeachment from the Board of Directors of the BFC, Toronto Chapter? ;)

Have you ever thought of getting a RKAT Sifu instead? I hear they're quite nice!

;) ;) :D ;)

I collect the United Hibben series and some of Kit Rae stuff and I am not ashamed at all. Looks cool as hell in my bar. Funny thing is that most people think they cost more than the other knives in the same room which cost a lot more then the United knives. I even put a real Gil Hibben next to the United version and everyone so far think the United version costs more. When I say everyone I am of course referring to the sheeple.....

Why not? I've seen some pocket knives in their mall stores that were kind of "cool" and "neat". Not great quality, but definitely interesting. And the quality seemed to be on par with any of the fantasy knives I've seen. I'm just not a fan of fantasy knives, nor am I a fan of white Cadillacs with gold-plated trim.

But if we all had the same taste in knives, cars, wristwatches, etc., what a boring place this forum would be and I'd be the first one out the door! (And I'll admit that I'm one of those people who thinks the Sebenza is "beautiful" in its simplicity.)

I believe there's a big difference between being a knife collector and a knife snob. If you don't appreciate the value and quality of a $29 CKRT, you don't deserve a Lake or a custom Mayo either!:D (just my uneducated opinion ;) )

I've been wanting the sword from the Movie Blade, just kind of cool looking, make a nice wall piece. But I wonder: If you buy one of these fantasy/sci-fi knives to display, is it really a knife or is it a just a decoration like a figurine you would buy at Wal-art ?

RL, I've got one of those Sabertooth Daggers and it is AWESOME for a display piece. BUT!!! Be very careful with those blades, my father-in-law somehow managed to slice his finger pretty bad with mine.

Hey, BadGuy, when I first saw the "Fang of Baelin", I HAD to get one and I have to say that it is my favorite of my fantasy pieces. (Even though I only have two.) ;)

When I began collecting knives, I was planning on collecting more fantasy pieces, but I decided on spending my money on knives that I actually use instead of just displaying. :D :D

(Note: Don't get me wrong, although they can be used for display...these two fantasy blades are  VERY  sharp!!!)

I also think the Sabretooth is rather neat. If I had the extra cash about I'd pick up a Sting in a heart beat. Just love that leaf blade design. I've got "wall hanger" type weapons all over my house. I also have real, usable ones as well. Just another form of art object in my book. Ones that might actually be useful as well.

I bought a Marto 440a Wakizashi a number of years ago. In hindsight it is not very good!

Now I have seen the Practical Katana for not much more bread. Its carbon steel not stainless and is differentaly tempered. 40 at spine and 60 at the edge. Amazing for the money! I saw one for about $220 (£165) in a local shop and really liked the look of it.

The Hibben stuff is disgusting in my very humble opinion:( but hey thats my opinion, so no offence intended!;)
