just happened to catch this tonight when channel surfing. The subject was how Gerber Knives makes automatic knives. Interesting process, with a lot of hand operations.

HOWEVER, the wrap up on the segment was a PC statement that these knives are "so sharp, so deadly, so dangerous, that they are only sold to the Military and the Police, as they are the only ones qualified to own such a knife".

What a load of crap.

I don't know about PC. I think it's just a loaded statement meant to put the regular viewer in awe of how awesome Gerber knives are. Their image has been suffering among knife fans, and I think they're trying to find a new niche.

That show is awesome, anyway. That, and How It's Made.

Gerber reps likely said the auto knives are sold to LE and Military personal only, and then the show ran their own spin to make it sound like something it’s not. We have to remember, off the forum, to the average non-knife person, Gerber is high quality and so the spin makes them sound even more special. We can’t really expect any less from a show that’s part marketing can we? :D

if they think that gerbers are too sharp to be made available for the public, i wonder what they'd say about Ban Tang knives...
