Goose!
You, in fact, have a micarta BUCK Scimitar if it is the black handled one!!! Buck made a run numbered to 100 and then generally produced the black micarta for a while. Not too many btw! It took some doing but I captured the burlwood and black micarta Scimitars both #64 and they look awesome in the display :)
Ain't it nice to stumble upon a lost treasure in the chest? One of those- "Oh Yeah...I got that!" type of thingys. Ah, the opulent life we lead..........!!!!!!!!

Dave

Thanks Dave.
I didn't realize that micarta could be finished so well. Thought I'd be able to see some linen pattern, or layers, that would be a dead give away. Since mine is so smooth, I thought it was phenolic.

Only made 100? No kidding? Mine is stamped "58" on the blade. Didn't know what that meant..."58" of what? Now I do.
Guess I best put it on the shelf and quit using it for mumbly peg ;)

Thanks again...

I have No. 63. Never thought it was micarta--had no grain to it etc. In view of Dave's comments, I had to take another look at it. Still looks like phenolic with no grain or linen. Would sure appreciate Dave's further input on the issue. Specifically, how does he conclude that it is micarta?

His comments make me give a second look at the item.

A long while back, I was asking the Forum about the knife and the "63" on it without the usual 63/????, and got very limited information at that time.

Well, Fellows Marvin and Robert..... Buck advertised the black Scimitar as micarta and mine looks like the best polish-job micarta ever witnessed..... but under close scrutiny appears to be the real deal of tight-grained coal black micarta!

Dave

I believe paper micarta shows very little grain.

Yup! Hogue uses it for their pistola grips too! Excellent stuff.....I mean excellent!!!!!!!! Remember that we went through this about the white micarta 124s back in October of '07? Very tight grained and smooth as the proverbial baby's bottom.

Works for me buckaroos :)
Thanks...

You, 'Goose, are very welcome my Buck Brother!
I haven't seen the 'list' for awhile so let me add a very obvious and trite one!

You should be able to...Try a magnifying glass...

Here's a paper Micarta 45 Auto grip, and also a linen Micarta stiletto scale...You should be able to make out the layers of paper in the one, and the characteristic "weave" pattern in the linen...

BTW: My Buck 124 has linen Micarta scales...It seems odd to me that Buck would offer both (and/or possibly canvas Micarta as well) when Micarta costs so much...

Addendum to above - The paper layers in the micarta are very dense; very close together...The linen not so much; the linen is much thicker than the paper and allows more of the Micarta to "soak" into the linen...

Thanks for the pics Trax. I took a look under a mag glass and can see the weave pattern in the Scimitar handle. Cool beans.

...???...You can see a "weave"???...That would be linen Micarta (like my 124 is), rather than paper...

Can you borrow someone's electron microscope and post a pic??? :)
