Scimitar steel question

I just finished a long quest of acquiring a plain edge uncoated scimitar for a decent price. The seller said that the knife only says made in Japan. I almost assume that the vg1 steel is on the Japan made models, but am not sure. I know that this knife was made in aus8 at one point and would assume that it was Taiwan made, like most cold steel AUS8 Knives. Can anyone definitively clear up whether there were any Taiwan scimitar or how to determine the blade steel on a particular scimitar?

Yeah, I guess I will have to sharpen it, cut test and use it. I recall being able to get vg1 to a much finer sharpness than aus 8 and the edge should hold longer.

I do know that the earliest models had vg1 stamped next to Japan, but I don't know if those were the only vg1 models.

Either VG1, or AUS8A.

Yes, I know those were the two steels it was made in. I am looking for information on how to determine the steel of a particular model.
