Scope for .22 magnum?

Hi all, I'm in the market for a scope for my Marlin 983s .22 mag. Looking to spend around $50. I've always been more of a pistol and trap kind of man, so my level of accuracy does not warrant a nicer scope. I'm looking for something rugged enough to live in a truck, accurate enough to hit cans at 100 yards, and stainless to match the rifle. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
Mark

BSA and Bushnell both make some decent, inexpensive scopes that are probably in your price range. One thing to be sure of, since you say you are new to the long-gun thing. You need a "rimfire" scope to go with your .22 mag. The optics are different on a centerfire rifle scope (to account for the differnces in range, trajectory, etc), and it won't work well on a .22

Any company that makes scopes usually makes a couple models for rimfire use.

Hope that helps!

Uhh, the only optics difference is the parallax. Most centerfire scopes are ranged for 100 yard parallax, and most rimfire for 50 yard (although Leupauld is 60). and some are ranged in meters. If you spend some money, you can get an adjustable parallax scope, but it sounds like this is not needed for your application.

There is no "need" to get a "rimfire" scope. The fact that its a 22 mag (vs 22 long rifle) might even help you decide on a centerfire model, especially if your standard plinking range is 100 yards.

Personally, I don't think 50 bucks will get you a very reliable model, but on the other hand, no need to spend 300 either. Take a look at Cabela's, Nikon, and Burris. Look for closeouts or last year's model, and you might be able to swing a decent mid range scope for a budget price.

I use either a straight 4X or 6X 1" tube scope on my .22's and .22Mag's. I don't buy a scope for the rifle, I buy for my eyes. 0 problems.

Simmons 3-9X32 .22Mag riflescope

Simmons suffered a slump in quality years ago. Nothing major but it hurt their reputation and a lot of folks think they're junk.

I've used a Simmons Deerfield on a .22LR for years and it was a good scope for the coin. Made shooting at 50 yards almost boring. I later switched to a 4X fixed Nikon that I picked up for $100.

Simmons, Weaver and Redfield optics were bought by Mead Optics a few years ago. Mead is probably the number one telescope company today. They've dumped a ton into their rifle scopes and have come out with some pretty impressive stuff under the Simmons and Weaver lines.

Still reasonably priced and imported but now stamped "Engineered and designed in the USA" on many of them.

I'd have no problem putting a Simmons on a rimfire today.

Best of luck in your search.

Chris
