I am putting together a Target-barreled 10/22 and would like some scope recommendations.
I will be shooting out to 100 yards or so, and would like to keep price down to about $200.

I use a fixed 4X Nikon Pro Staff (on a Marlin. Not a 10/22). No complaints here.

You can get a 3-9X for under $200 that would work well on a 100 yard 10/22. Try Cabelas.

If you're serious about putting a 10/22 together, go to http://www.rimfirecentral.com/forums/ . You might want to look into some trigger upgrades. It makes a huge difference in 10/22's.

I was thinking of getting a volquartsen 10/22 hammer. Off topic, but any idea how easy it is to install one?

For that price range, in a 3-9x x32 mm, I can recommend the burris fullfield II with ballistic dot reticle, or the bushnell elite 3200.

I have the burris on a marlin .22 (bolt action) and its a very clear, very rugged scope. It zeroed easily, and has held that zero after several thousand miles behind the seat of my rough riding 1 ton truck. The ballistic dot reticle is nice for judging holdover, and a chart is included for different calibers/loadings to designate a range for each dot (including CCI .22LR, 36 grain hollowpoint). It also has rubber lense covers included that do a nice job of keeping the dust off.

The bushnell elite has rain gaurd anti fog coating on the lenses, and I've never had a problem with it. Even taking it straight from inside the house out into sub zero temperatures. Its very clear, and easy to focus. Zeroed easily and has never needed adjusting since. I have this one on a savage model 11 in .243win, so it sees a little bit of recoil although nothing too extreme.

Beyond those two I would probably look at leupold(don't think I've ever heard a bad review of one). I have also heard good things baout Nikon, but have been told repeatedly that the pro-staff line isn't that good of a value and to stick with their monarch line which costs a lot more.

I have a Leapers model on my Beeman R7 air rifle. Its a 3-12 with decent optics. Its a lot of scope for the money about $140.

The Leupold 3X9 gets rave reviews from air gunners, who tend to be really serious about optics. Its about $350 though. Its a pretty small scope and would look good on a 10-22.

Easy to install but just the hammer alone isn't going to improve thing greatly. I prefer the Power Custom kits, better pricing for better quality.

here are two of the 10/22s I currently have, both shoot very, very well

Top one has a Fajen stock, Volquartzen match barrel, Simmons Gold 4X16 scope, all Power Custom trigger parts
Bottom has Boyd stock, Tactical Solutions barrel, Tru-Glow 2 power dot and Power Custom trigger parts.

I think that looks like a pretty good deal. I don't recall seeing any of the monarch line going for less than $300 anywhere, and the glass is supposed to be very good in them.

Also, to correct my earlier post, both of the scopes I mentioned have 40 mm objective lenses. That is about as big of a scope as I would want to put on a .22, just for the fact of how tall the mount needs to be. You'd end up wanting a raised cheekpiece on the stock for anything bigger.

I used weaver see through rings to mount the burris on my .22, and with it I'm able to use either the iron sights or the scope. Its a fun set up, but you do have to raise your head a little bit to get a good view through the scope.

I've had really good luck with BSA and for a .22 they're super! I'll also second the trigger job, I did my first one on a 10/22 that I scaled down for my kids and needed a lighter pull for the youngest. Now that I've experienced it, I'll never stay stock on the Ruger!

Thanks everyone for your help.

In this case, I think my standard impulse-buy reaction was a good thing. I went with this Nikon. (Good timing, because they just raised the price. I got it for $197 with free shipping. )

I don't even need a scope at the moment and would have bought one at that price :D Let us know how it works out

Had I seen this earlier i would have suggested the Simmons Whitetail Classic Scope 6.5-20x 50mm - Midway USA regularly has it for about $109. Hard to beat those specs at that price!

I put Nikon glass above Tasco, Simmons, and Bushnell in general. In some instances, the Nikon scopes can rival Leupold glass. Of course, it depends on the model and the application. I shot Tasco and Simmons scopes for years without trouble, and I still have a Simmons 4x on my muzzleloader. Still working just fine.

Regarding that Nikon, I think you did good, Rat.

You got a really good deal Rat. I have 3 Nikon scopes - 2 rifle and a revolver. All on big caliber pieces. They've been in rain, freezing rain and snow with zero problems.
