Considering Durham, NC, Fayetteville, NC, Columbia, SC, Macon, GA, Columbus, GA and Montgomery, AL.

Haven't been to any of them, so I am curious what the locals say before I start looking for jobs.

My main thing is that I would like to live closer to the ocean (live in TN now) for weekend trips and whatnot, but not too close as the housing prices go up significantly.

Thanks. :)

I've got cousins in and near Macon - and it seems like a pretty nice town from my visits there. It's also less than an hour from Atlanta if you're into spending time in the city.
Can't help you with any of the other towns you listed.
best of luck!

I've visited Durham and Fayettesville several times. Durham is one that I would recommend.

I am a lifelong resident of Alabama, live in the Birmingham area now. I worked in Montgomery for a short while, and I must say that Montgomery is the last place in Alabama I would chose to live. It is too big to be considered a small town, but too little to convey any of the advantages of a larger city. It is also the most frustrating place to drive that I have ever encountered.

Now, if you can work in Montgomery and live in a rural area nearby, or a bedroom community to the north or east, like Milbrook, Prattville, Tallassee (where I grew up), then it might be tolerable. I personally would avoid living west of Montgomery toward Selma. I worked in Selma also, and all of the negatives that the name Selma evokes are well founded.

I am retired now, and if I ever relocate it will be to the Auburn/Opelika area, which frequently places high on the various lists of best places to live in the U.S. It has become a major retirement destination, however, and real estate prices reflect this.

Have you considered the Eufala area in Southeast Alabama? I have never lived there, but those that do seem to love it. Smaller city, great bass fishing and deer hunting area, not too far from the coast.

:thumbdn: for Columbia. Been through there a few times and it seemed like a pretty shitty place.

C'mon out to Washington State..... we're on a REAL ocean, not that creek thing you got between New York and old York. I'll buy ya the first Rogue brew.

Wow. I've lived in Columbus and Fayettville. Stayed in Durham quite often. Stay away from those 3. Check out Ashville, NC or Wilmington, NC. Much nicer places.

Have you ever heard of the Atlantic Ocean? LOL
It is real and also accessible from NY.

I was raised in Montgomery, AL, and my wife's parents still live there.

No way I would ever move back there. I don't think I'd even live as close as Prattville or Millbrook, though I have to admit, I'm not that familiar with those cities.

NC for sure, Durham has some nice parts and some not so nice parts. Same with Greensboro, Winston is also nice as is Burlington/Mebane/Chapel Hill... Chapel Hill is very hippy-ish...

We moved to NC because you get to see all the seasons, yet the snows hardly ever sticks, and when it does its only here for a day or two. AND... Three hours West on I-40 and you can be in the Mountains, or three hours east on I-40 and you can be at the beach. Plus Blade Show is only a four hour drive! :D

We can CC, and pocket clips and sheaths are normal around here, if you ever use a knife in public most dont even bat an eye. I'v used my knives around lots of folks and most just say "thats a handy thing to carry..." or "my dad carried one all the time too."

The bad part about NC?

The natives say, "y'all" :p

I hear they got this guy named Randy who runs around boot leggin in NC, kinda like a Johnny Appleseed, but more like a Johnny Apple Jack.:p

This man speaks the truth, head west. I've lived all over the country and the Northwest has EVERYTHING. Beautiful ocean, lots of open mountains, sprawling forests and AWESOME fish. Steelhead, salmon and northwest trout beat out anything I ate on the ocean in Florida. The people are very nice and tend to be outdoorsy party lovers. Not to mention thousands of miles of world renowned whitewater rafting if you ever get sick of that salty stuff. People really know how to live here. They know how to brew too... I'm a Wisconsinite with viking blood and there aren't many Wisconsin microbrews that can hold a candle to Northwestern breweries.

scarysharp, the Atlantic happens to be the "creek thing between New York and old York" of which I speak. New York is in New York...... old York is in England. Sorry to confuse ya. The two oceans don't compare.... there's only one 'Big Blue'.

PayetteRucker, ya bring a tear to me eye with your description. Every letter.

Love to add you to our ranks, SkinnyJoe.

Have a nice earthquake!

No, thanks, just had one ...

Heheheheh... Esav my boy, try out the version by Social Distortion. Doesn't change the odds of seismic disturbance out here, but it's an awesome listen. BTW, you started here a month after I did, and ya got 45,000 more posts than I do..... Spark musta deleted some o' mine. ;)

Unbearable heat? Check.
Suffocating humidity? Check.
Sky-full of biting insects? Check.
Poison Ivy? Check.
Soul-less suburban sprawl and congested traffic? Check.

But at least you won't have trouble getting sweet tea at restaurants. :D

As far as NC goes at least, Fayetteville is probably the last place I'd consider living. Raleigh/Durham area is ok. In my opinion, the closer you get to the Appalachia, the nicer the state becomes. The ocean area is nice too though, seems to shut down entirely in the winter months. :)

Another vote for the Pacific Northwest even though it's not on your list. Saying that though, in my opinion NC does have the best pork BBQ in the world. If you're into beer - NC, like WA and OR has a ton of fantastic breweries.
