Back in June a good friend of mine passed away suddenly. Over the weekend I went with his son and daughter down to WV to retrieve some of his belongings. Some of those belongings included a few shotguns and handguns. This afternoon his son came by the hose with a box. In that box was this............

A Remington 870 Magnum Special Purpose.

It was a gift for taking the time to go and help them get things squared away. I was a little overwhelmed and a bit surprised but thankful all the same.

Now....

I need a 26inch vented rib barrel for it. Will all 870 barrels fit on all 870 receivers? Does it make a difference that it is not marked as an "Express" but rather 870 Magnum Special Purpose?

Just got an email from Remington. Express barrels will work on this model.

No plans to modify it yet. I want to see how she performs in the field.

Sorry to hear about your friend. The gift on behalf of the family must have left you speechless. That is a terrific gesture though.
I am willing to bet that thing is going to kick like an angry mule Ken. Reminds me of the movie Army of Darkness, "THIS!, is my BOOM stick!" :p
I do own a Remington Express 870 18" and it kicks like Bruce Lee.

I have fired a smooth bore slug barrel of a Remington 870. It does kick like a mule! Especially with 3" Remington Copper Solid slugs!

Thats a great surprise Ken. The 870 is an outstanding shotgun.
I was going to mention that the Expess barrels will fit, but Remington beat me to it :D

The Express designation was a lower end version of the Wingmaster .
Same mechanics, just doesn't have the highly polished bluing on the receiver and barrel, and the wood is a little less fancy and some have synthetic stocks.

IIRC the Special purpose designation was for versions with sights and sling swivel attachments.

If it kicks a little more than you like, you should be able to get a pre-fit Pachmeyer Decelerator recoil pad for it. They really work well and aren't very expensive

I had a rifled slug gun, Mossberg 590, and fired those slugs. The kick was 45 ft.lbs., same as a 475 Holland & Holland. Accurate as all get out though.
