Scored a "GRANSFORS BURKS AB" Hatchet today, but don't know which model I have!

Hi all,

Wow! What a way to celebrate the FOURTH OF JULY! I scored a "as new" Gransfors Burks AB Hatchet
(made by MM) with Leather sheath at (of all places) a Flea Market. I won't mention how little I paid for this Hatchet as it would surely make most BF members cry. At any rate, despite my searching the web for the last two hours, I can NOT figure out which Model GB I now own. I THOUGHT it was the "Small Forest Axe" as it looks the same in the pictures (exact same handle shape) but, the SFA has a 19" handle where this Hatchet has a 14.5" handle. This GB has NO metal collar on the handle. The handle is marked "Prima Hickory Gransfors Burks AB". The cutting edge is 3" and the head measures 5" long. I must say, the GB is truly a beautiful Hatchet (whatever model I now own). Thanks in advance for any help ID'ing this Hatchet.

Hi Thomas,

Sorry I am unable to post pixs due to my computer having major problems (read VERY old) computer. Hopefully, I can replace when funds allow. At any rate, thanks for providing the link. That being said, nope, that's not it. As I mentioned, it looks exactly like the SFA (has the same curve in handle) but with a 14.5" handle instead of a 19" handle. HT, nothing fake about this Hatchet, it's very much a Gransfors Bruks.

Not the carving axe eh? The wild life hatchet has a 13.5" handle but different shape than the small forest axe. Take a look
And congrats!....Mattias Mattsson made mine too!

Thanks Sullie,

I am very happy to have found such a beautiful Hatchet however, trying to ID this Hatchet is making me NUTZ!
Please see my second thread on this subject.

I would say you have a Vilderness Axe. They have shanged that pattern little during the years mostly according to the handle and I have a example from 1994 I got from my brother when I turned 28 that locks much like a smaller forest axe. The lether edgeprotedkter scould in that case go all the way up to the back to even protekt the backpack from the hole axehead.

Hi NB,

It is possible that it could be a Wilderness Hatchet with the (shorter) SFA style handle. The weight of the Hatchet (with sheath) is 1.5 pounds. I've got to admit, I kind of like this size Hatchet due to the fact it packs right into my EDC
(every day carry) bag without problem. Still (all my kidding aside) it appears I may very well have some sort of rare Bird with this 14.5" curved handle GB Hatchet. I like it!

I take a picture of my old wilderness axe and put here in a few days and we will se if it aint right.

It's possible that your axe is a rehandled WILDLIFE axe, forged by Mattias Mattsson.

Hi Guys,

NirreBosse.....THANK YOU for posting the picture. The two side by side Hatchets (the two behind the Swiss Army Knife) look exactly like my new Hatchet. Please again, which Model GB is that.....does it have a 14.5" handle ? EDIT : Ahhhh, I missed the part where you said......Wilderness (circa 1994) Axe. Perhaps I found a "new old stock model". NB, does your "Wilderness Axe" have a 14.5" handle ?
No doubt it has a curved handle. Thanks for your help NB. Ramonr, I suppose it's possible but, it looks to be all original I believe this GB is "as new". Thanks Ramonr.
