It is a 696 and seems to be a very well designed utilitarian tool. I have been looking for a marlin spike for knot tying for a while now. This one seems great, and the sheep's foot blade is the perfect accompaniment. The only markings on the knife looks like

I am planning on using it hard and if it works well putting some custom handles on it. I have some mahogany that would be nice and appropriate.
My guess is that this is kind of like a USCG scout knife.
If anyone has some recollections about these knives, I would be most interested in hearing them.
