Scotch Brite recommendations?

When I take in a knife with significant scratching on the blade, I find the easiest remedy is to just "satinize" it. I've had pretty good luck using Micro Mesh pads, or sometimes some pretty coarse wet/dry if the scratching is bad enough.

But from the posts here, it seems like the favorite abrasive for a lot of folks is Scotch Brite. There are an awful lot of Scotch Brite products, and a lot of different grits, so what specific products and grits do you favor, and where are the best places to find them?

Thanks,

Andrew

I use the dark red(steel wool grade 1) and tan/gray(steel wool grade 00). I THINK I have the grits correct. You can also access their website for more info. Not sure if the big box stores have them, I use my local hardware.

Joe, thanks. By chance are those the two pads in the "HP PRO Hand Pad Trial Pack"? http://solutions.3m.com/wps/portal/...-7448-PRO-per-bag?N=7581709+3294093868&rt=rud If so, where did you find it---I've been having the devil of a time sourcing it here locally.

Not sure. I buy at my local hardware packaged bulk. I buy only a couple pads at the time.

Only scotch brite I use are belts =) and they may not be name brand, not sure. Got them from trugrit.com but they work beautifully for smoothing everything out and cleaning up a blade w/ light scratches.

I found the Scotch-Brite 7447 (maroon) and 7448 (gray) at a local Sherman Williams paint store. They are perfect for putting a satin finish on a blade.

SCOTCHBRITE GRIT CHART

7445 - White pad, called Light Duty Cleansing - (1000) 1200-1500 grit
7448 - Light Grey, called Ultra Fine Hand - (600-800) 800 grit.
6448 - Green (?), called Light Duty Hand Pad - (600) 600 grit
7447 - Maroon pad, called General Purpose Hand - (320-400) 320 grit
6444 - Brown pad, called Extra Duty Hand - (280-320) 240 grit

Blue Scotch-Brite is considered to be about 1000 grit.
(The value inside the parentheses is directly from 3M.)

The maroon 7447 and grey 7448 Scotchbrite pads are great for putting a satin/brushed finish on steel. Another good alternative for knife blades is those rubber rust eraser blocks.

Thank you, gents, for recommending the 7447 (maroon "Very Fine") and the 7448 (gray "Ultra Fine"). That's just the info. I needed.

And thanks especially, inStitches, for the tip on Sherwin Williams. There happens to be a SW store on my way home from work, so I stopped there today and they had exactly two types of Scotch Brite pads---the 7447 and the 7448! And at about $2 each, I was happy to make the purchase.

Thanks again to all.

I do my sword blades with Scotch Brite (carbon in the 1050 to 1095 range at super low hardness = scratches aplenty from cutting). They sell individual sheets at my local Ace Hardware in a variety of colors (I know they had dark gray, maroon, and white for sure a few months ago, don't recall what others they may have). If you have one nearby, you may wanna check 'em out. I usually start with a dark gray and then a maroon.

GSH, thanks for the tip. There is an Ace nearby and I may check it out.
