For you serious scotch drinking Hogs: I had dinner last night at Citricos in Disney World and noticed a bottle of Macallan "M" at the bar. I know nothing about scotch, but have read that this is some very rare stuff. Someone paid over $628K for a large bottle a year or so ago. They were offering 1 ounce pours for $300 (or 1/2 ounce/$150). Is this scotch really that great? Once in a lifetime/big birthday type thing - would you try the scotch or save that money for a new battle grade offering?

When is the last time you had a taste of $500 a bottle scotch? If the answer is longer than last week, go BG.

I have little doubt there are a few people in the world that could drink that Macallan M and recognize the value of that premium a scotch. I also have very little doubt that 99.9% of the world's scotch drinkers' palates are not defined enough to actually appreciate what makes it worth that amount of money.

I know feeding me a 1/2 ounce of that would be throwing pearls before swine. And I don't mean that as a good pun in any way.

If you have an itch bad enough and you can reach it without straining yourself, feel free to scratch.

In your own words "I know little about scotch". I think a taste of that M would be lost on you and I would go with the Busse.

Oh yeah, it would definitely be lost on me. I really wanted to see what scotch aficionados thought of the "M". The price point was about what some of the two week offerings have run and was just an interesting gauge since I have that in common. I became a beer geek listening to other geeks talk about styles and a Hog reading what you guys post.

The thing about scotch is it is a lot like beer, in that there are different styles. When I first got into it I tried scotches from the various regions to at least nail down the "style" I liked first, before then elevating to higher price points. A good analogy might be that if you like port but hate IPAs, it doesnt matter how well reviewed/received the IPA is, you likely won't like it. I found that I detest Islay scotches and prefer Speyside/highland area scotches... all this is to say that while the M might be a great and expensive scotch, it might not be to your tastes.

Additionally scotch costs go up dis-proportionally to their value. I have been lucky enough to try Macallan 25 which at the time cost 10x what the MaCallan 12 cost...it was not 10X "better"

Buy the knife over the whiskey...

I've encountered similar decisions. It all boils down to mood and personal choice. The material item will last longer and the liquid in will become liquid out....kinda like pissing money away, no?

The "M" is actually NAS so no age statement on that one. It is safe to assume that there is some good old Golden Promise distillate in there though so like any "experience", it may be worth it just for the experience (or not - that's up to you).

I regret not trying to get in at El Bulli when I had the chance because I was swayed by the pragmatic/value argument - will not let that happen again.
