Hi everybody. I haven't posted much over here, but enjoy reading and learning from you guys. Wanted to share this idea in case you want to make one of these for building camp furniture..etc. I picked up a 1" auger bit at a flea market for a buck and since the screw and cutting surfaces were good on it, I decided to make a scotch-eyed auger out of it. Just cut off the brace taper and welded it into a piece of one inch pipe nipple. Works good.

That's a pretty slick idea, I like it!

Did you do anything to relax the weld?

All I did was drill a hole (slightly larger than the shaft) through the pipe, stuck it in and welded it with 7018. I did have a Jack and Coke to relax the welder...:D

:) Now I want some Jack!

Often when you weld a steel like that bit you need to temper the weld to make it softer so it doesn't crack at the weld.

Nice!! I buy those old auger bits when I see them at yard sales and such. Now I have to make one of these.
