I'm absolutely sure this has been covered, but an hour's searching hasn't found my specific question:

I have some old scotchbrite belts for my grinder, both maroon and green. Looking for new ones, I don't find those colors at all, but instead am seeing "coarse medium fine" choices from 3M. How does the fine 3M belt (I think it's blue) compare to my fine green belt? Is this color change a difference in manufacturer, or a progression in surface conditioning technology? :) It's been years since I bought the ones I have, and have no clue where I got them.

Thanks for any info,
Warren

I may be wrong but I believe the blue and green are the same. Maroon is medium, green is fine, & gray is very fine. Pop's has the best price I have found. Hope this helps.

I just got a gray one and it puts a pretty nice fine "machine" finish on a blade.

I have a kind of a light green/grey 3M one that is listed as very fine. I got mine from Jantz. It's all I use for finishing my knives. Amazing finish right after 180 grit too.

I have a maroon "beartex" belt from Tracy that is listed as medium, and will make a blade look like a worn bar of soap. It eats steel up.

I learned the fine art of hand polishing long ago, would spend hours on a blade, and then watch it get immediately dinged up in its first use. Machine finishes suit me just fine!
