What are the pros and cons of both of these? I've got an extra mandrel and motor and thought about getting a scotchbrite wheel and an extra buffing wheel on the other. Does it work as good, or is it better than using the belts?

Edited to add: I just noticed that this is my 1000th post. Damn, I need to get out more. :D

Michael, I have both and use them for different techniques, The belts I use for finishes on blades. I have three different wheels, coarse, med, and fine. I use the wheels for cleaning steel, polishing steel, and finishing, according to need. It helps with the wheels if you have some kind of speed control. At higher speeds the wheels will put a divit in the blade very quickly. They also sharpen convex edges quite nicely.

First thing, the cost of the scotchbrite belts and wheels are kinda high. I think I paid $22 for one belt! Then, they are just as dangerous as a buffer. Believe it! I have had a scotchbrite belt grab a blade out of my hands, and fling it betwixt me legs. Not fun. They are great for rounding off the spine area, but make sure the tip is down when you do this. Don't ask me how I know this. Oh yeah, I just told you. :)

I've had alot better luck with the Norton Beartex 1000 convolute wheels. They work extremely well when blending titanium. MSC carry them. Expensive but durable.

I swear by Sotchbrite belts ! You can get them from Sheffield for like $18.00 a piece. They are expensive buyt they last a long time. They are excellet for gettiong a good using finish on your knife. As well, they will blend lines in your grind that might not be exxactly what you hoped. Good luck !.....RDT

I use SB belts and wheels all the time.. They work great for what they do IMHO... I use the belts for machine satin finishes, and the wheels for melting sharp corners... They seem expensive but they do ALOT of work too... Hope this helps ya..

I haven't found much use for the Scotchbrite belts but I use the wheel all the time. Good for cleaning up roughness, polishing hammer heads, cleaning rust, etc., etc. Kind of expensive but usefull.

Thanks -- I'll have to get me some of them fancy-pants belts and wheels. Wish I had thought of this before I made my order to Sheffields. I'm sure I could find some more stuff to buy there, or at MSC. :D

Burch, don't forget that Koval will be in Kansas City this weekend. They will have Scotchbrite stuff. :)
