Can you scotchgard a tilly hat or does the material continue to stay waterproof after all the washings?

Like any DWR treatment, it has to be refreshed from time to time to remain effective.

i think it depends on which tilley you've got.
for the normal ones they do recommend to scotchgard it once in awhile...

for the lightweight versions i think they recommend a different kind of treatment.

I've been Scotchgarding mine for 10+ years, usually once a year depending on how often it's worn or washed. I wash mine once a month and don't really wear it in winter.

In the early spring I'll usually dye my hat, wash it a few times and scotchgard it. By late Fall, (6 to 8 washings) it'll be soaking up it's share of water but still be very good in not soaking enough to be a source of water in the desert.
