A few questions to those that own Scott Cook Lochsas.

Is there any marking or way to determine which blade steel you have?
The birth card for my Lochsa is long lost but not forgotten.
It acts differently than any other s30v steel that I've used which could be two things, better heat treat or it's s90v

I've come to terms that I won't be getting a take-down tool for it, so I had to make one! A vice grips and an automotive clip expander tool does the trick!

Upon disassembly I noticed a few things:

1: There is a tiny drilled dot (which is kinda like a micro detent mark) on the one side of the knife under where the pb washer rides kinda where CRK marks an "s" for s30v

Do any of yours have this mark or something similar and if you have either an s30v or s90v could you/would you check this out? Maybe one is for s30v and two marks is s90v, I have no idea.

2: On the other side of the blade where the pb washer rides it appears to be hammered like my ring, not sure if you can tell in the picture I tried my best to show it.
The weird thing is that it is only on the one side not the otherside that has the tiny detent mark.
I doubt it had any crap under the pb washer because the washer is perfectly intact and it would have mauled up the washer not the hardened steel.

Do any of your have this "hammered" appearance under a pb washer??

Final thoughts:

I find it pretty cool that the pivot and pivot screw are entirely made of titanium and that the pivot bushing is actually pb just like the washers, which I think lends to the smoothness of this folder.

I get such joy from using my Lochsa and hope it lasts my lifetime.

when they test for hardness, the tool produces that divot in the steel. it's that "dot" under the washer that you are referring to.

I don't know the answers to any of your questions, but thanks for the pics. Can you add pics of the 1 piece frame?

I hope I can get on his list one day

Never thought of that, but that's a logical explanation

I have one pic from earlier:

I can get some other later.

I find it hard to believe that you can't find that much information about the Lochsa, since it's been around for so long, but maybe it has to do with most people collecting them and not using them.

As requested, a few pics of the one-piece frame.

Also, it's ingenious how he left a piece on the inside of the frame not milled to act as a stop pin when the blade is closed so it doesn't come in contact with the frame, I circled the area in a picture.

And a side note, the crk belt pouch fits the lochsa perfectly with the pocket clip installed, which is great, since I wear the belt pouch at work to keep the knife secured, and then I can take it out of the sheath and put it right into some dress pants or pajama pants. The only down side to the sheath is a noticable rubbing of the frame where it bulges out, which I can deal with since it is a user.

I love how the blade flows perfectly with the handle in front of the lockbar, it is perfectly flush across where you grip it, feels fantastic!

And the hand rubbed finish, although looks great, doesn't hold up very well in my line of work...oh well!

hardness test should be done three times, plus they would have to flatten the surface again since the indenter pushes the metal out and would create high spots around the edge of the indentation.

How he gets the stop pin in can you imagine when you have a look on the pictures of this thread;

To find out if the blade is S90V or S30V you have to look at the area of the blade which touches the frame in the open position.
It is the even part which is not in contact with the liner.

If you have a lochsa with a S90V blade there is a "90" engraved.
If you have a lochsa with a S30V blade there is nothing.

The mark is usually very hard to see.

I read this somewhere on the internet but I can't find the page again.

On my lochsa with S90V the mark is really hard to see.

Any chance of a picture of the S90V mark?

Now THAT is how the knife should be used!!

I agree!!! I love seeing these expensive customs with some wear. I have not yet been able to afford such an expensive knife but when I do, it will most definitely be a user. I'm not so much of a collector really as much much as I am an accumulator. All of my knives are users.

I have been drooling over an S90V Lochsa for years, literally reloading his page every day.. After I check my email, I check his page to see if he is taking orders again... Everyday... i want one oh so bad.

I even sent him several emails trying to order one of his fixed blades, but he hasn't responded to a single one.

Although he makes cool stuff....that would be enough for me not to want to order from him anymore.....plenty of other makers that make drool worthy things that ARE willing to take my money.

As requested by Sigifrith a little while ago some pictures of the "90" mark on the blade for the S90V steel used for that blade.

The mark is barely to see with the naked eyes.

Thanks for the pics. I'll know where to look if the chance ever arises.

On a side note, did anyone here buy the latest bench knife?

I thought I saw a WIP pic showing the handle was two pieces that became one. Am I correct about that? Or, is it one piece of ti from the get go?
