I just got into customs and should be receiving a Hinderer XM-18 soon. I just love the look of the Lochsa, and I am wondering what you guys think. I hear there is a 2 year+ wait, and I was wondering whether you think it's worth it. If not, what others would be a good substitute. I'm working on getting a Mayo TNT also, but who knows if the right kind will show up. I know the Lochsa is worth the money, but i don't know if I can stand wating 2 years. I just want to hear anything you have to say about it. Thanks.

I waited a year for mine. It goes by pretty quickly if it's not the only knife that you plan to purchase. With me buying a couple of knives every 3-4 months to keep me satisfied, the year was up before I knew it.

All good things come to those who wait. Get on queue for one now before he stops taking orders.

This is always a problem with fine makers--they put a lot of time and care into their knives, and other folks want them too. Generally, the lines do not get any shorter, and it is better to order early rather than late.

Ther are a couple of strategies for reducing the wait. One is custom dealers. the best of them do not take much of a markup.

Another is to discuss it with the maker. Maybe he is making a batch which is not completely spoken for. Or maybe he is trying something new, and if you were willing to go with that, it would cut the wait down considerably.

It is ALWAYS worthwhile talking to the makers. (Aside from being a great benefit of custom knife collecting--most makers are really great people.)

Dude, if you want one, get on the list. The reasons are:

1. If you don't want it later you can always sell it later- and since there'll still be a line you can take advantage of the impatience of others.

2. It isn't going to get any cheaper, and with the rising costs of Ti, I'd PERSONALLY rather lock in my price now rather than waiting to see what the cost of Ti is going to be in a few years.

3. If he stops taking orders you're screwed.

A personal story for you:

I found a knife that I've wanted for a LONG time. Its the Satin Wheels model by Darren Chard (Canadian maker). I wanted one since I first saw one, and when I wrote him, he told me it would be a little over a year, and around $500. I thought that was a lot of money to pay for a knife, and didn't know if I was ready to go to that expense yet. I hemmed and hawed for about 2 years, and then finally figured out that if I saved over that year it wouldn't be that much really. When I emailed him he informed me that he no longer takes orders. I was screwed. While I MAY get one of these someday, I'm STILL screwed for getting one from the maker.

PLEASE don't let this happen to you. There is ALWAYS a part of you that thinks "what if" when these kinds of things happen. Think about what the others have said as well.

I don't know if I could possibly be more disapointed. I was going to order one yesterday, but decided to sleep on it, and when I decide to order one today I see that AS OF APRIL 24 HE IS NO LONGER ACCEPTING ORDERS!!! I sent him an email and will call him in the morning explaining my situation, but if I missed my chance I am going to be so angry at myself. Hopefully he'll make one small exception. All I can do is hope now.

I'm sorry about that. Maybe one should not sleep on such things. If he DOES make an exception, I'd keep quiet about it. If not, I'd try asking to be put on a list of interested people in case he has someone who decides to drop off the list.

runger I know of a Lochsa that is avaliable. it is not mine, but email me if you are interested and I can put you in contact with the person.

I am with TKC its worth the wait:thumbup: plus its only a lil more expensive than a large sebbie.:D

Runger,

After reading your post, I started to get concerned with my order I placed with Scott for a left-handed Lochsa. I had written him an email ordering this knife on March 1st, but never received a reply acknowledging the receipt of my order. Anyway, to make a long story short, I wrote Steve again a few days ago when I first read your post asking for confirmation that he received my order and that I was in fact on the waiting list. I received a reply last night confirming that I am on the waiting list for a left-handed Lochsa, type of blade material to be determined. Whew, now that was a load off my mind.

Now, I'd like some help from you guys determining what blade material I should choose for my Lochsa. Being that mine will most probably be made approximately 2 years from now, I asked Scott for a ZDP-189 blade, thinking that it may be available 2 years from now. My second choice was Talonite/Stellite, third choice was stainless Damascus, fourth choice was S90V followed by either S30V or BG42 which I kind of prefer over the S30V. What do you guys think about my choices and I would also like to hear your own selections.

Thanks,

Hi!
I am in the same situation, trying to choose the blade steel. I hope that my Lochsa will be made during the end af the summer, but who knows? Now I have red about inlay options – makes it even more difficult to choose.

I think I will go with damascus blade. Scott wrote to me:

"I personally like Devin's Ladder pattern stainless Damascus.* The pattern*flows with the profile of the handle nicely, (in my opinion anyway).* And double lug is +$75.00.* No problem changing at this point.* Let me know."
*
Scott

But ZDP-189 sounds interesting. But at the same time. New steels will allways come and go, but a nice Damascus is allways nice!

Swe,

In Scott Cook's quote, does the $75.00 cover the extra cost of both the Damascus and the double lugs, the Damascus only or the double lugs only? In not Damascus, has he already quoted you a price with Damascus blade?

Thanks,

75 covers only the double lugs. Everything with Devin's Ladder pattern stainless Damascus will be somewhere around 750. Have you guys heard anything about inlay options?

I am sorry that you missed out on ordering one! I feel very lucky to have gotten my order in in January!! I ordered mine with S90V and dual thumb studs.

As far as steel options are concerned:

When Scott started to make the Lochsa I asked him if he could make one for me in Talonite. No go. I waited for a year or two but the options stayed the same. I got a used S30V Lochsa but in the end I ordered an S90V Lochsa through Scott. At that time the wait was a bit over year. Seemed like a long time but actually time goes by quickly if you distract yourself with other things. I got the knife six months ago and I couldn't be happier. Of the steel choices I would pick S90V as the best option for an EDC knife.

I can not wait to get my Lochsa!! I had been wanting one, and decided to order one!! I am happy with the 2 year wait, as it gives me plenty of time to save for it.

I hope you'll post pics of the XM-18 and tell us what you think of it. I know I'm interested.

You will love the XM-18!! I love Rick's work, and I KNOW that the XM-18 IS an amazing knife! I look forward to when mine arrives too.
