I am looking at a Slobodian tanto and would like to know what the consensus is around here about his knives. Any insight would be very helpful.

I've handled his knives a couple of times at the Paris knife show. They are VERY well made IMO. The prices were out of my range though. I'm sure someone more familiar with his work will step in.

I have one knife made by Scott (although it is not a tanto). I'm very pleased with it but it is indeed a bit on the expensive side.

Are you looking especially for a Slobodian tanto or a tanto in general. If it's the latter then there are much more options available. For instance I know that Daniel O'Malley (from Bladegallery) has a nice tanto up for sale although it is not on his website right now.

Slobodian's work is very pretty but the problem is that it's neither tradition nor performance oriented. If you know and are OK with that, that's fine, but if you want something either traditional or super hi-performance, I would choose someone else.

Although I've never owned one, I consider Scott one one of todays best artists, incredible work. JMO.

His brother is an oustanding cabinet maker, by the way.

Slobo is an oustanding art knife maker.

If you want performance, I'd suggest Bailey Bradshaw or Joe Walters, altho they may be harder to come by.

as long as they are there (on your hand), two thumbs up for Scott

His stuff is incredible!!!!! Super nice guy too!

A name that many may not be familiar with is Don Polzien.

Don's Japanese pieces are more authentic, cut better and have a much better price than Scott's work.

Yes I own a Katana and a Wakizashi from Don. I also have 5 years of Kendo experience. Don has many more years of experience than I do.

Don is a great guy and an excellent source of knowledge about Japanese pieces. He is often called on to authenticate swords as well as do restoration work.

I totally agree with WWG about Don Polzien. The only thing you have to know about Don is that he never ever responds to e-mails. He hates it:D . So you have to give him a call...by the way he is a great guy to talk to.
