SCOTTeVEST Gear Jacket

I've been looking at the 2.5 version for a few days now. I think it's only a matter of time before I get one.

Above is the link to my review on the ScotteVest 2.0 Sport jacket. The quick summary is, I like it a lot, though the sport version is basically a windbreaker, and too much gear makes it start to sag.

I also have been wearing the 2.5 version regular jacket for a while. I love it. I come to work now with no case or binder or anything -- it's all in my jacket. I can walk around all the time with all my stuff on me. My one complaint would be that the stowable hood has made the collar on the jacket a bit bigger than I'm happy with for a stand-up collar. I'm carrying a pretty good amount of gear, and the thicker material keeps the jacket from sagging.

Here in the Bay Area, the sport version will take me through spring and fall, and the regular version will take me through the winter. This is easily the best gear-carrying solution I've found, for me it works better than fanny packs, man purses, Dockers Mobile Pants, etc.

I bought Ver 1.0 when it first came out to replace my Columbia Photo-Journalist vest. It works as advertised. Lots of pockets. Conduits that routes your headset cords out of the way. Big enough to manage two sets of headsets. One for your music, one for your cell phone. Ver 2.5 is nice. I like the zip off sleeves and the hidden hood. It'll hold a small laptop, but offers no cushioning whatsoever.

Hey, can you buy a 1.0 or a 2.0 and upgrade it later to a 2.5?
Don't laugh. I asked about a "buyback" program, no dice.... Not even a discount for being a loyal customer. ;)

If it came with Kevlar reinforced elbows and some sort of waterproofing like Gore-Tex or Micro-Pore I think they would really have a winner. I think they could get $300.00 for a model with all their tweaks to a photo vest and state of the art all weather materials. Include a couple pockets that are sealed well enough to be submersible to keep your most valuable electronics safe in even the worst conditions and combined with a truly Gore Tex type shell, you'd have a real winner. Of course to make a couple pockets completely waterproof would prevent them from using the PAN channels built into th evest, but technologies like Bluetooth wil mitigate teh value of wire channels for the type of geeks who would buy something like this (me).

If these guys would get together with North Face, I thik we'd reall have a go anywhere garment.

With the available fabric choices, I'm on the edge, but not ready to buy one yet.

Per their website (link on top) the fabric is water-repellent. Which means it's not made of breathable waterproof nylon like Gore-Tex'd ones.
