I went to Blade 04 in Atlanta with the wife and really had my hopes high on getting a folder made by Mike Obenauf. I was able to get VIP passes for the show which got me in an hour earlier than the general masses. When the doors opened for VIPs, my wife and I made a beeline to Mike and Kit's table. Everything was already gone.
I was perplexed as to how this could happen. It was then I learned how the internet dealers get first dibbs on all the show knives. I didn't have a problem with this because business is buisness. My wife on the other hand was really upset with makers doing business this way. She was really against me getting an Obie after that. I on the other hand still had the burning need to have one.
Months passed and every day I would religiously check the customs for sale by individuals forum and other custom dealers web sites. It seemed like the Obie's were dissapearing only minutes before I'd see them. Checking became a secondary routine.
Well Christmas eve I was looking at a picture of a DeVilliers knife and told the wife I sure would love to have that. She told me that she would buy it for me if I wore these goofy antlers on my head all day Christmas (from after showering until after dinner). She never really thought I'd even try something seemingly so silly. Well, I put them on in the morning and wore them non stop all day. We started at home and went to her parents house and spent the middle of the day with all her family. That night we even had dinner guests. They never once moved from my head.
I'd won the bet. The knife would be mine. When I went to order it the next morning, I went through the routine and low and behold there was an Obenauf for sale over on the USN. I immediately responded and had snagged myself a large model #1.
When it arrived boy was I suprised. That thing was huge. All that time and the perfect knife wasn't so perfect for me after all. I decided to sell the #1 and get something more appropiately sized for me. I ended up going with a My Tighe instead of the DeVilliers and I am really happy with my choice.
I never stopped scouring the net for that elusive Obenauf. All that looking finally paid off. Last night I looked over on Dave Stark's site
www.steeladdictionknives.com
and there it was, like a deer in my sights. An Obenauf Model #3. I could not believe it was actually available. Just seeing the word available made me feel like I'd won some kind of lottery. Well, I made an inquiry on the knife and found out today that I will soon be receiving this in the mail.
Dave is a really nice guy and has a great selection too. I'll try to get photos up when I get my hands on my new knife.
Thanks for listening to my long winded story.
