Hello all! Semi new to the forum and still trying to figure out the right places to post etc. I've been posting some pics of my cold steel gi tanto mod project on various different threads and thought I'd start a new post for the additions I made to the sheath for a scout carry set up. This has been my first venture into knife modding and sheath making so I apologize if everything looks a little rough.

All materials were purchased for about $30 total. It might be hard to tell but every piece is independent and can be removed or added as seen fit. The pouch is about 2 1/2 x 3 in. and has about 12 Vaseline soaked cotton balls, some Benadryl, fire steel striker, and a sharpening stone. Below the pouch is roughly 6-7 feet of 550 para cord. Overall it weighs 21 oz fully loaded and sits nicely and very balanced at the small of the back. Opinions/criticisms welcome!!

Looks good.
A detail; Out of sheer paranoia, I run a piece of string through the eyelet in the firesteel and round the end of it. Twist if too long.
Would be a drag to need the firesteel, only to find out you lost it along the way.

Thanks guys! Bladescout, that was my original intention but couldn't find the thickness of bungee cord I wanted to use at the hardware store. Your comment got me thinking again and I ran and grabbed one of ladies black hair ties and ran it through with a knot in the back. Works like a charm thanks for the inspiration!

Zapper, I'm not sure what the real weight is as I got it from a scrap pile but it's almost exactly an 1/8th of an inch. I think I recall reading that 8oz to something like 12oz is good for sheath making but I could be mistaken.

I could post the pattern for the pouch I made from graph paper if anyone is interested. It was sewn from one piece to make it easier. I could also post some pics of all the straps open etc to get a more detailed look if anyone else wants to try and make something similar. Happy tinkering!

Hmm, I just started a thread on looking for someone to make a sheath for scout carry, but this isnt a bad idea either. Did you order the straps or is that something you made as well. I would be interested on modding mine but I know nothing about working with leather.

I must say it's quite rewarding once you finish making it. I did make the straps myself and have to say it was one of the easier parts.

The attached photos show the two tools I needed to complete the project. I already had the grommet kit so I needed to pick up the snap kit to complete it, each is around $15-20 I believe. A rubber mallet is what I used to set them. For the straps all you need to do is measure the circumference around the sheath and add some overlap for the snaps and play for a belt to feed through. (more overlap if you desire two snaps on each). First thing I did were the snaps on each end, then I placed the straps in position and marked the holes to be punched for attaching to the kydex. Use a grommet in each hole for durability. That's as fas as you would need to go if you just want the straps. I also attached photos of the fire steel loop and the pattern for the pouch. The measurements for the pouch would have to be specific for your sheath but you can get the general idea.

Ah, I see what you did. Thanks, may just have to give this a try. I wonder if I can find some belt keepers that are long enough

You can make keepers easily enough. Cut whatever size you need and stitch em. I believe Al covers it in The Art of Making Leather Cases vol.1
